SIRAJGANJ, Dec 10: An Awami League leader has passed away while in custody at Sirajganj Central Jail.
He died while undergoing treatment at Shaheed M Monsur Ali Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday morning, according to Kamrul Huda, district jail superintendent.
The deceased, 55-year-old Ataur Rahman Angur, was the forest and environment affairs secretary of the Awami League's Sirajganj Municipality unit.
He is survived by a wife, two sons and a daughter.
According to the jail superintendent, Angur was arrested in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act, and has been in jail since Nov 1. He had been hospitalised within the jail facility from the outset of his detention due to persistent breathing problems.
"He was admitted to Shaheed M Monsur Ali College and Hospital after his condition deteriorated around 5am on Tuesday. He passed away around 5:30am while undergoing treatment," said Huda.
According to the jail superintendent, Angur's body will be handed over to his family after an autopsy.
After the Awami League government was toppled on Aug 5, Rafiqul Islam Kala alias Abdullah, a Jamaat-e-Islami activist, filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Sirajganj Sadar Police Station on Oct 26, citing an incident that took place in 2015. Angur was one of the accused in the case. —bdnews24.com
