Information and Broadcasting Adviser Nahid Islam has said the interim government aims to set an example for the world in the trial of the genocide carried out by the deposed Awami League government during the July uprising.

"The genocide carried out by the fascist Awami League government during the July uprising is unimaginable. Every citizen of Bangladesh demands justice for this genocide," he said during a meeting with a delegation of the International Jurists Union, or IJU, at the Secretariat on Tuesday.

"The current interim government is committed to ensuring a transparent and impartial trial for this atrocity. Bangladesh aims to set a global precedent in holding such trials."

Nahid said, "The autocrat Hasina fled the country following the uprising on Aug 5. With no government in place for three days, many fascist supporters took the opportunity to escape. The process of bringing the perpetrators of the genocide to justice has begun, and the collection of evidence is in its initial stages."

When the delegation inquired about the timeline and process of the genocide trial, the advisor said the International Crimes Tribunal, or ICT, would expedite the trial of the July genocide, following a transparent process that adheres to international standards.

He emphasised that the trial would never be one of revenge, as justice means fairness. He also stated that all anti-fascist parties are united in their support for the trial, expressing hope for both domestic and international cooperation in advancing the trial process. The adviser said that this trial is not only about establishing the rightful justice for the oppressed and the victims of the genocide in Bangladesh but also about demonstrating to the world the consequences of crimes against humanity.
