Hundreds of workers and truck drivers in Dhaka's Tejgaon, staged a protest blocking the Satrasta intersection and setting fires on the road on Tuesday night.
The blockade, which began around 7 PM, severely disrupted traffic flow in the Mohakhali and Maghbazar areas, causing extensive gridlock.
Talukdar Md. Monir Hossain, president of Truck Owners' and Drivers Association, reportedly associated with Awami League, was detained by the Detective Branch (DB) of police around 5:30 PM near Tejgaon office.
In response to the arrest, the workers staged the demonstration demanding an immediate release of their leader and an end to what they describe as "unnecessary harassment" through legal cases against them. They also vowed to continue their agitation until their leader is released.
However, Police have confirmed that multiple cases are filed against Monir Hossain, leading to his arrest under one registered with Paltan Police Station.
Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station officer-in-charge Gazi Shamimur Rahman, stated that Monir Hossain's arrest was based on an existing case. The authorities are currently monitoring the situation as the protest continues.
The blockade has created severe inconveniences for the public, with significant traffic congestion reported around the Satrasta intersection. Authorities are working to ease tensions and restore normalcy in the area with commuters, especially those heading home after work, expressed frustration over the situation.
