Ensure protection of migratory birds

Caring for and properly hosting guests is the responsibility of every individual. Providing the best service to a guest should be considered a sacred duty. But what if, instead of being treated with kindness and hospitality, they are subjected to various forms of abuse and exploitation? What if tragic events, such as the loss of life, occur to them? While humans may not subject their guests to such tragic fates, such events unfortunately happen to migratory birds. Every year, countless migratory birds arriving in Bangladesh fall victim to such heartbreaking incidents.

Every winter, birds from distant regions like Siberia, seeking shelter from the severe cold, travel to countries with milder winters, such as Bangladesh, where they are hunted and killed by hunters for their own gain. Bangladesh is a subtropical country with relatively mild winters compared to many other parts of the world. This is why birds from regions like Siberia, Antarctica, the Himalayan mountains, Finland, and the Philippines migrate to countries like Bangladesh to escape the harsh winter.

As soon as winter begins, in October and November, migratory birds arrive in flocks and create temporary shelters in Bangladesh's various haors and water bodies. According to experts, the highest number of migratory birds arrive in December and January. During this time, flocks of birds settle down in different areas.

For example, Tanguar Haor, Hakaluki Haor in Sylhet, Nijhum Island, Durga Sagar in Barisal, and Neel Sagar in Nilphamari are some of the places where migratory birds create temporary homes. Additionally, during winter, the sounds of these birds fill the air at Jahangirnagar University and the Mirpur National Zoo. Furthermore, Bangladesh has 25 wildlife sanctuaries, where migratory birds also build their nests. Like other wildlife, migratory birds also have the right to roam freely in these sanctuaries, and it is imperative that they are given maximum protection.

However, it is often the case that due to the actions of some smugglers, and hunters, these birds cannot roam freely and safely. Some poachers lie in wait during the winter to trap these migratory birds. They set nets and traps in areas with heavy bird migration and capture them in various ways. Later, these birds are sold at high prices both within the country and abroad, which is deeply distressing. During the winter, some so-called hobby hunters in different regions of the country also use guns to kill these innocent birds to satisfy their whims. It is as if, "For some, it is the season of plenty, for others, it is destruction."

Migratory birds definitely are a blessing for our country. By creating temporary homes here, they play a crucial role in our country's biodiversity. Their contribution to maintaining the natural balance in our country is undeniable. If we continue, however, to hunt them instead of protecting them, it is only a matter of time before our country becomes void of these migratory birds. Protecting them is our humanitarian duty. Along with the state and relevant authorities taking stringent measures against poachers and smugglers, it is the heightened vigilance and care of all of us that will help protect migratory birds. Therefore, we must all strive to ensure the highest protection for these birds and give them the freedom to roam in our country for a while. Whenever we witness the hunting of migratory birds, we should immediately inform the authorities and also make the hunters understand that their actions are deeply tragic. Let us raise awareness within ourselves and others to protect these precious creatures.
