A young woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her paternal home at Amtali upazila in Barguna district on Tuesday.
The tragic incident took place at Manikjhuri village in the upazila.
The deceased was identified as Sabina, 19, daughter of Jamal Mir from the same village.
According to Sabina's in-laws, she had married Md. Bayezid a year ago after a love affair. However, Sabina's parents did not approve of the marriage. This disapproval led to ongoing family disputes between the parents and their daughter, which persisted after the wedding.
On the afternoon of December 9, 2024, a local arbitration meeting was scheduled in an attempt to resolve the issue. However, Jamal Mir, refused to attend the mediation session, which further escalated tensions. After the meeting, Sabina had a heated argument with her parents after which she went to bed.
The next morning, on December 10, the victim's mother went to check on Sabina and discovered her hanging and called out for help.
The family immediately informed Amtali Police Station, who arrived at the scene, recovered the body, and brought it to the police station.
Officer-in-charge Md. Ariful Islam, confirmed that an unnatural death case has been filed and the body has been sent for autopsy at Barishal General Hospital.
