A suspect has been detained in connection with the attack on the convoy, carrying coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement’s central committee, at Sonargaon upazila in Narayanganj.
The incident occurred late Sunday night at Meghna Toll Plaza area on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway.
Police apprehended the suspect on Monday from the Ashariachar area near the crime scene, confirmed Sonargaon Police Station officer-in-charge Mohammad Abdul Bari, adding, "Police launched an immediate operation following the incident and detained a listed criminal on suspicion. The individual is currently being questioned and their identity is being withheld for investigative purposes."
The OC emphasized that the attack did not appear to be politically motivated based on preliminary findings. He added, "The area has long been a hotspot for muggers and we conduct regular patrols. Our team reached the scene within minutes but the attackers had already fled. The activists reported losing mobile phones and valuables. Upon investigation, the numbers they provided for the stolen phones were found to be inactive for a considerable time."
The attack took place while the activists were en route to Lama upazila in Bandarban, for organizational activities. Those in the vehicle included Arif Sohel, Member-Secretary of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, along with members Rupaiya Shrestha Tanchangya, Mahamuda Sultana, Rakib Mohammed, Muinul Islam, Ibrahim Nirab, Yasmin Mitu (a Dhaka University student), and Mishu Ali.
Law enforcement continues its investigation, exploring all potential angles to ensure justice and safety in the area, added the OC.
