Police have arrested a general secretary of Madaripur District Awami League in connection with the murder of a student during the Anti Discrimination Movement.
The incident occurred during the movement in front of Youth Development Office in Madaripur. Kajal Krishna Dey, general secretary of Madaripur District Awami League, is one of several individuals named in the First Information Report (FIR) related to the case.
The fatal clash took place on July 19, when tensions flared between the banned organisation Chhatra League members, anti-discrimination activists, and police on the Madaripur-Shariatpur road. During the confrontation, Towhid Sannamat, a young activist from Suchiarbhanga village in Madaripur Sadar upazila, was killed in what witnesses described as crossfire involving police and Chhatra League members.
The family of the deceased initially refrained from pursuing the matter, reportedly fearing repercussions under the then-ruling Sheikh Hasina government. However, following the government's fall, Kamrul Hasan, a local leader of the district Chhatra Dal, filed a murder case with Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station.
Prominent figures named in the case include former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, ex-MPs Shajahan Khan and AFM Bahauddin Nasim, district Awami League President Shahabuddin Ahmed Mollah, General Secretary Kajal Krishna Dey, and Madaripur municipal mayor Khalid Hossain Yad, among others.
Madaripur Sadar Model Police have confirmed Kajal Krishna Dey's arrest and stated that further investigations are underway.
