SATKHIRA, Dec 9: A civic dialogue on 'housing crisis and solutions of urban low-income people' was held in the district on Monday.
The dialogue disclosed, about 70,000 people are living in slums in the district municipality. Despite the fact that housing is a fundamental human right, no effective plan has yet been taken for this population, it added.
It was held in the Satkhira Central Public Library auditorium, with people coming from different areas.
A research organization Bangladesh Resource Centre for Indigenous Knowledge (BARCIK) arranged the dialogue.
Participants proposed ensuring safe, environment-friendly and disaster-resilient housing for urban low-income people, education for slum children, providing free medical and technical education to the poor, providing special risk allowances and incentives to deal with disaster risks and adopting liveable urban planning for all.
The dialogue was presided over by Azad Hossain Belal, convenor of Satkhira Zilla Nagorik Committee.
Among others, environment activist principal Ashek-e-Elahi, human rights activist Professor Pabrit Mohan Das, Executive Director of Swadesh Madhav Chandra Dutta, civic leader Ali Noor Khan Babul, President of Udichi Sheikh Siddiqur Rahman, landless leader Abdus Samad, journalists Mizanur Rahman, Golam Sarwar, and SM Biplab Hossain spoke.
