An eight-year-old girl was reportedly hacked to death by her stepmother at Singra upazila in Natore district on Monday morning.

The incident occurred at Dighal village under Hatiandah union in the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Mst. Howa Khatun, daughter of Hafizul Islam, a resident of the area.

It was learned that the child fell into a pond after her head was hacked by her stepmother, Nupur.

Jukeha Begum, the aunt of the deceased, said that Howa Khatun was murdered because she had informed her father about Nupur's extramarital affair.

Upon receiving information, police recovered the body from the pond and sent it to Natore Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy, said Md. Asmaul Haque, officer-in-charge of Singra Police Station.

Police arrested the deceased's stepmother for interrogation, the OC added.
