A tragic road accident claimed the life of a motorcyclist and left his nephew critically injured at Fakirhat upazila in Bagerhat district on Monday.
The incident occurred on the Khulna-Dhaka Highway near Taiyab Ali Bottola area on Monday afternoon.
The deceased, Md. Ashraful Islam Ghorami, 45, was son of late Momin Uddin and hailed from Gafura village at Ashashuni upazila in Satkhira. In the meantime, his 12-year-old nephew, Roni Ghorami, sustained severe injuries and was first taken to Fakirhat Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital due to the severity of his condition.
Mollahat Highway Police Station officer-in-charge Sheikh Nuruzzaman confirmed the incident, saying the accident occurred around 1 PM when Ashraful and his nephew were traveling from Khulna to Gopalganj on a motorcycle. Upon reaching Taiyab Ali Bottola, they collided head-on with a Khulna-bound tourist transport vehicle. Ashraful died at the scene and Roni suffered critical injuries.
Highway police recovered the body and took steps to hand it over to the family after completing legal formalities. The vehicle involved in the accident was seized but the driver and his assistant fled the scene, the OC added.
