Biodiversity of Sonadia Island threatened by encroachment, deforestation and pollution. Youth environmental rights activist and wildlife photographer Tasfia Tahsin Purnatha has campaigned to protect the island's environment and biodiversity. Besides, the issue of climate change was also in his campaign.
This campaign was conducted to increase awareness among local people, fishermen and tourists.
Also on this day he conducted a limited scale cleaning operation in a part of Sonadia Island. At this time, he removed various plastic products, food wrappers, polythene etc. wastes lying in the area including water bottles and edible oil containers. These wastes are brought to Cox's Bazar and dumped in the dustbin.
It is known that he was standing with handwritten posters in different parts of Sonadia and Kaladia islands all day on Saturday. These posters had various slogans to protect Sonadia Island, reduce carbon emissions, and take measures to prevent climate change. At this time several fishing boats came near. Keen fishermen and sailors want to know about it. Tasfia informed them about the importance of protecting the environment of Sonadia Island. He urged not to destroy parabons in the island, not to throw plastic and polythene everywhere, not to throw waste in rivers and seas.
Tasfia Tahsin Purnata is an avid wildlife photographer and painter. Class XII student Tasfia has been doing wildlife photography since the age of 14. Painting of birds and animals is also one of his hobbies. While doing wildlife photography, issues such as climate change and environmental pollution in different areas of Bangladesh, killing of forest trees, and hunting of wild animals are deeply etched in his mind. From this, he decided to run a campaign to protect the environment and increase awareness on climate change issues.
This month he will visit Sundarbans and adjacent coastal areas for another campaign to prevent climate change and protect forests and wildlife.
Talking about her campaign, Tasfia Tahsin Purnatha said, “In between studies, I take pictures of wildlife. While taking pictures, I realized that our forests, wetlands, animal habitats are gradually decreasing. Along with this there is environmental pollution. Due to these reasons, birds and wildlife are not seen like before. Our environment is getting out of balance.
He said, we are getting to know about global warming and climate change by reading books and media. Bangladesh is one of the countries that will be most affected by warming and climate change. We are paying for the activities of developed countries. In the meantime, if we continue to destroy the environment, then the amount of our damage will increase.
Tasfia said that if effective measures are not taken now, the impact of climate change will be more severe in the coming days. And those of us who are teenagers now and our next generation will suffer the most.
Therefore, it is our own need for the new generation, including teenagers, to be vocal in protecting the environment and preventing climate change.
