Educationist and founding chairman of the University of Development Alternative (UODA) Mujib Khan, on Sunday urged the interim government to form a separate education reform committee. The committee would be tasked with implementing necessary reforms to make private university education more accessible for students from middle and lower-middle-class families.
Speaking at a press conference marking the "Education Fair of UODA" at the Dhanmondi UODA auditorium, he said, "Students of the country have sacrificed their lives during 1952, 1969, 1971, 1990, and 2024 to establish us as a developed nation. But we are still struggling to ensure standard education for average students from middle-class and lower-middle-class families."
He pointed out that a large portion of students in the country are not achieving CGPA-5 in SSC and HSC exams. Many of these students cannot secure admission to public universities, and most families cannot afford the Tk 10 to 12 lakh required for graduation expenses.
"By accepting this reality, the government must take the initiative to regularize the private education system for all levels of people," Mujib Khan added.
He noted that while the government has instructed private education institutions from primary to college level not to charge more than Tk 13,000 for admission fees, most private educational institutes in Dhaka charge more than Tk 50,000.
