Pirojpur Freedom Day celebrated

PIROJPUR, Dec 8: Pirojpur Freedom Day was celebrated on Sunday with tributes and commemorative events, marking the town's liberation from the Pakistani occupation forces on this day in 1971.  

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Ashraful Alam Khan, along with Additional DC (General and ICT) Md Selim Hossain and other senior officials, paid floral tributes at the town's Liberation War Monument on behalf of the district administration. 

Superintendent of Police (SP) Khan Md Abu Naser, along with Additional SP (Admin and Finance) Sheikh Mustafizur Rahman and their colleagues, also placed wreaths at the memorial. Civil Surgeon Dr Md Mizanur Rahman, freedom fighters, and representatives of socio-cultural organizations participated in the ceremony as well.  

Later in the day, the Muktijoddha Sangsad organized a discussion meeting at their office in the town. Prominent speakers included former district commander Samir Kumar Das Bachchu, Shahidul Haque Chan, former deputy commander Rabbani Feroz, and freedom fighters Abdus Salam Baten and Nurjida Khaled Robi.  

The event paid homage to Pirojpur's historic liberation on December 16, 1971. Under the leadership of Commander Zia Uddin Ahmed of the Sundarban sub-sector in Sector 9, freedom fighters, along with local supporters, captured the district headquarters. The Pakistani military forces fled towards Dhaka by gunboat along the river, marking the town's liberation from occupation.  

The day served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made for the country's independence and the enduring legacy of the valiant freedom fighters.
