Two individuals were killed and 10 others sustained injuries in a clash between two rival groups in Narsingdi's Raipura upazila on Saturday.
The incident took place on Saturday morning in Nazarpur and Methikanda areas of Chandarkandi union.
The deceased were identified as Manik Mia, 55, Chandarkandi Union Parishad (UP) member of ward No. 8, and Kalpana Begum, 32, a former female UP member, both belonging to the Rubel group. Among the injured, two are identified as Amir Hossain, 21, and Rabbi Mia, 24, while the identities of other victims is yet to be ascertained.
According to locals and police sources, the clash stemmed from a longstanding rivalry over establishing supremacy between supporters of Abid Hasan Rubel, a local Jubo League leader, and Harun-or-Rashid, Vice President of Raipura Municipality Awami League. The conflict escalated when Rubel's uncle, Manik Mia, sought refuge at the house of Bashir Uddin, a UP member of ward No. 9. Supporters of Harun-or-Rashid allegedly attacked him there and killed him in Bashir Uddin's courtyard.
Raipura Police Station officer-in-charge Abdul Jabbar confirmed the incident, stating that the authorities are working to bring the situation under control and an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances leading to the violence.
