Seven murdered, 87 injured in 9 districts

Seven people including two women have been murdered and at least 87 others injured in separate incidents in nine districts - Cumilla, Barguna, Khulna, Naogaon, Dinajpur, Sunamganj, Gopalganj, Natore and Narayanganj, in three days.

CUMILLA: A young man, who was stabbed to injure by some youths in the city on Tuesday night, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital on Wednesday.

Deceased Sajib Hossain Babu, 22, hailed from Sultanpur Village in Debidwar Upazila of the district. He lived in a rented house in Ashoktala area of the city. 

Quoting locals, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station (PS) Mohinul Islam said that on Tuesday night, a youth who was known to Sajib called him out of his rented house in Ashoktala area.

Later on, some youths beat up Sajib indiscriminately and stabbed him near the Ashoktola Rail Gate, leaving him critically injured.

He was then rescued and admitted to Moon Hospital in the city, where Sajib succumbed to his injuries at around 11:30 am on Wednesday while undergoing treatment.

The official further said that as Sajib's relatives attempted to take his body back to their village home and did not informed the police, they recovered the body from his relatives at around 3 pm and sent it to Comilla Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

The actual reason behind the killing could not be known immediately and police and army members are investigating the matter, the OC added.

AMTALI, BARGUNA: A woman was killed by her husband following a heated argument over allegations of an extramarital affair in Amtali Upazila of the district on Tuesday.

The incident took place in Tarikata Village under Arpangasia Union of the upazila at night. 

However, locals caught the accused husband, while he was attempting to flee after the incident, and handed him over to the police. 

The arrestee is Monirul Islam, 22, son of Harun Khan of Tarikata Village, while the deceased was identified as Tinni Akter, 20, daughter of Nizam Hawlader of Chawra Chandra Village in the same upazila.

According to police and local sources, a dispute arose between the couple earlier in Tuesday evening over an extramarital affair. During the argument, Monirul struck Tinni on the head with a stick in a fit of rage. Severely injured Tinni was then rescued and taken to the Amtali Upazila Health Complex by her husband and mother-in-law, where the on-duty doctors declared her dead on arrival. Monirul attempted to escape the scene but was apprehended by locals and handed over to the police.

A relative of Monirul, named Nur Alam, stated that the couple had been married for only eight months. Allegations of Tinni's extramarital affair had caused significant tension in their relationship. Despite efforts from both families to resolve the issue and assurances from Tinni to end the affair, suspicions persisted.

On the night of the incident, Monirul allegedly caught Tinni speaking with her alleged lover on the mobile phone, which led to the violent altercation. 

Amtali PS OC Md Ariful Islam confirmed Monirul's arrest and said that Tinni's body has been sent to Barguna General Hospital morgue for an autopsy. 

However, further investigation is underway in this regard, the OC added.

KHULNA: A local leader of BNP, who was shot and hacked by miscreants four days back, succumbed to his injuries at a private clinic in the city on Tuesday morning. 
 
Deceased Amir Hossain alias Boing Molla was a member of Ward No. 30 Unit of BNP under Khulna City Corporation. He was the brother of former councillor of Ward No. 3 Aman Ullah Aman.  

It was known that a group of unidentified criminals shot and hacked Boing Molla in front of Tutpara Taltola Hospital in the city on Friday night, leaving him critically injured.

Khulna Sadar PS OC Monir-ul-Gias said that Amir Hossain was rescued and admitted to Khulna Medical Hospital (KMCH) in critical condition. As his condition deteriorated further, he was shifted to Khulna City Medical College Hospital, a private clinic, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) from the KMCH early Tuesday. Later on, he succumbed to his injuries at the ICU on Tuesday morning.
His body was handed over to his family members after an autopsy, said the OC.

A gang of criminals shot and hacked Amir Hossain alias Boing Molla in front of Tutpara Hospital in the city at around 10:30 pm while he was returning home.

Criminals at first shot and chopped his head and shoulder, leaving him seriously injured.

His younger brother Abdullah filed a case with Khulna Sadar PS in this connection.

However, the law enforcers are investigating the matter and trying to arrest those involved in the killing, the OC added.

DHAMOIRHAT, NAOGAON: A farmer was killed and seven others were injured in an attack carried out by their rivals over land dispute in Dhamoirhat Upazila of the district on Tuesday morning.

The incident took place in Bolla Village under Aranagar Union of the upazila at around 10 am.
The deceased was identified as Atwar Hossain, 60, son of late Azizur Rahman, a resident of the aforesaid area.

The injured persons are: Mozammel Haque, Babul Hossain, Mamun Reza, Mahfuza Begum, Abez Uddin, Shakhawat Hossain and Abu Taher. All of them are residents of the same village.

Police and local sources said that the families of Anwar Hossain and late Asir Uddin Mandal had been at loggerheads over the ownership of a piece of land in the area for long. On Tuesday morning, both groups had a heated argument when Anwar went to plant mustard seeds on the disputed land. At one stage of the altercation, Anwar along with his associates including Shahjahan Ali Sagar and Nur Alam Belal attacked the family members of Asir Uddin, leaving Atwar killed on the spot and seven others injured.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Naogaon Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

The injured were rescued and taken to Dhamoirhat Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor referred Abed Uddin and Mozammel Haque to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Dhamoirhat PS OC Md Raisul Islam confirmed the incident, adding that filing of a murder case with the PS is underway and legal action would be taken in this regard.

GHORAGHAT, DINAJPUR: Police have recovered the body of an auto-rickshaw driver, who was murdered by unknown assailants, in Ghoraghat Upazila of the district on Tuesday. 
 
The deceased was identified as Bharat Chandra Das, 55, son of late Kalidas Chandra, a resident of Kalupara Pithuligachha Village in the upazila. 

His body was found in a mango orchard in Loharbond Village under Bulakipur Union in the morning.

According to local and police sources, Bharat left home with his auto-rickshaw on Monday afternoon, but did not return. His family searched for him throughout the night but failed to locate him. At dawn on Tuesday, a local resident discovered the body in the mango orchard and alerted the community. 

Being informed, police retrieved the body and sent it to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.  

Ghoraghat PS OC Nazmul Hasan confirmed the incident and said that a murder case has been filed against unidentified suspects. 
Preliminary investigation revealed marks on the deceased's neck, indicating possible strangulation, the OC added.  

Assistant Superintendent of Police (Hakimpur-Ghoraghat Circle) ANM Niamatullah visited the scene and assured that efforts to identify and apprehend the perpetrators are going on.  

Police believe the murder occurred elsewhere and the body was later dumped in the orchard. Investigators are pursuing all leads to bring the culprits to justice, the official added.

DERAI, SUNAMGANJ: At least 30 individuals were injured in a clash between two groups in Derai Upazila of the district over territorial dominance.

The incident occurred in Rarail Village under Kulanj Union of the upazila on Tuesday evening.  
Of the injured, 10 people sustained bullet injuries.

The gunshot victims are: Muhibur Rahman Chowdhury, Anju Chowdhury, Sohel Chowdhury, Juel Chowdhury, Akmal Chowdhury, Konor Chowdhury, Shubho Chowdhury, Islam Uddin Chowdhury, Javed Chowdhury, and Tasim Chowdhury. They were referred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.  

According to police and local sources, tensions had been escalating between two rival groups led by Anu Mia Chowdhury and Nanu Mia Chowdhury on one side and Jasim Uddin Chowdhury and Sumon Chowdhury on the other. The dispute stems from a long-standing dispute over establishing supremacy in the village.  

The conflict intensified after police visited the village earlier in the day to investigate a case filed by Anu Chowdhury. Following the police's departure, tensions boiled over, culminating in a violent clash in the evening. 

Derai PS OC Abdur Razzak confirmed the incident, saying, "The conflict resulted in multiple injuries including gunshot wounds. We are conducting operations to recover firearms and apprehend the perpetrators." 

Dr Prashanta Das of Dirai Upazila Health Complex reported, "Ten individuals with gunshot wounds were brought to us. They have been transferred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for further care."  

GOPALGANJ: More than 50 people were injured in a violent clash between residents of Maharajpur and Mochna unions in Muksudpur Upazila of the district on Tuesday. 

The incident occurred in the morning near Banogram Bazar adjacent to Maharajpur Union Parishad office over a dispute involving the illegal occupation of government land for building shops.  

According to locals, tensions began when one Shawkat Sikdar and his associates from Aikdia Village in Mochna Union attempted to construct shops on government land near Banogram Bazar. 

This was met with strong resistance from residents of Maharajpur Union, leading to a series of chases and counter-chases that escalated into a full-blown clash. Armed with makeshift weapons, residents from both unions engaged in the conflict starting at 9 am.

The confrontation, which lasted over five hours, turned areas such as Banogram, Aikdia and their surroundings into battlegrounds. 

Law enforcement eventually brought the situation under control by deploying additional personnel, but the fighting persisted until reinforcements arrived.  

At least 40 people were admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, Muksudpur Hospital and Rajoir Hospital in Madaripur for treatment. Others sought medical care at private clinics.
  
Muksudpur PS OC Mostafa Kamal confirmed the incident and said that the situation is now under control. Additional police forces have been deployed in the area to prevent further violence. 
 
BARAIGRAM, NATORE: A young woman was allegedly strangled to death by her husband, who then fled the scene after tying her hands and feet to a bed and locking the door, in Baraigram Upazila of the district.

The incident took place on Monday evening in Royna Bharot Uttarpara Village under the upazila.  
The deceased was identified as Akhi Khatun, 22.

Her body was recovered from the locked bedroom that night and sent it to Natore Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy on Tuesday. 

However, the suspect and the deceased's husband Ismail Hossain, 25, son of Taijul Islam of Hajrapara Village in Natore Sadar, remains at large.  

Local Union Parishad Member Nazrul Islam said that Akhi married Ismail about two years back. From the early days of their marriage, Akhi reportedly suffered abuse by her husband. To escape the violence, Akhi convinced her husband to live at her parents' house. However, the abuse continued even there.  

On the day of the incident, both Akhi and Ismail returned home in the afternoon after working in fields when Akhi's parents were not home. Upon returning home, the victim's parents found the door locked from the outside.

After repeated calls went unanswered, they broke the lock and discovered Akhi's body tied to the bed.  

Baraigram PS OC Sirajul Islam confirmed the murder and stated that the deceased's neck showed signs of strangulation and bruises. Preliminary investigations suggest that the murder was a result of domestic conflict. 
 
"Ismail fled the scene with his clothes, his wife's belongings, and both their mobile phones. Police have launched a drive to arrest him. A case is being prepared in connection with the incident," the OC added.

NARAYANGANJ: A man was allegedly stabbed to death by miscreants in Sonargaon Upazila of the district on Monday.
Deceased Shahjahan, 31, was the son of Al Islam, a resident of Dudhghata Village under Pirojpur Union in the upazila. 

The deceased's family said that drug dealers called him from his house and cut his veins. He died while undergoing treatment at a private institution in the capital on Monday evening. Earlier, on Thursday afternoon, the deceased was called from Dudhghata area and stabbed.

Sonargaon PS OC Mohammad Abdul Bari said that the youth was stabbed after being summoned from his house to pay the money owed to him. He later died while undergoing treatment. The body of the deceased has been recovered and sent to a hospital morgue for an autopsy.
 
Filing of a case with the PS is underway in this regard, the OC added.
