GHORAGHAT, DINAJPUR, Dec 6: At last there has been development touch in the traditional Raniganj Gow-haati (cow haat) in  Ghoraghat Upazila of the district.

This is one of the big haats in Dinajpur. Earlier it was at the field of Raniganj Government School and College. To avoid traffic on the Dinajpur-Gobindaganj highway it was shifted to Raniganj few years back.

But the haat was not developed with road, toilet and other facilities. Now, it has been brought under development with necessary facilities, including toilet, water house and mosque and road.

According to sources at the upazila administration office, Tk 2 crore have been allocated for the development of the Raniganj Gow-haati (cow haat); and a 1,000-metre RCC road is constructed for communicating to the haat from the Dinajpur-Gobindaganj regional highway.

In mid-October,  the road development work was inaugurated by Ghoraghat Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rafiqul Islam.
While talking with this correspondent of The Daily Observer, locals said, the cow haat was in adjacent to the high school in Ranigaon Bazar; cow and goats are traded at the haat in two days weekly; later on, it was shifted to about one kilometre distance to avoid traffic jam on the highway; but in the new place, the haat is not linked with proper road; rain makes it clayey, causing halt to cattle-carrying 3-4 wheel vehicles.

A local, Talebur Rahman said, after a long time the haat has been developed. "We request for drains along the new roadsides to stop breaking."

Ainul Islam said, "We could not move on the muddy road. Now new road is built. Buyers and sellers will be benefitted. We, the villagers, will enjoy benefits."

Chairman of No. 3 Singra Union Sajjat Hossain said, "Businessmen come to this haat from all districts of the country. Government gets a revenue of about Tk 18 crore from the haat. We have got about Tk 2 crore as  Union Parishad Unnayan Fund on 15 per cent basis. We have started road construction; nine toilets have been constructed inside the haat. We have taken different projects to develop the haat. Development work of this big haat will continue."
