Lumpy skin disease appears alarmingly at Nageshwari

NAGESHWARI,  KURIGRAM, Dec 6: The deadly lampy skin disease (LSD) of cattle has appeared in Nageshwari of the district this season. It spreads rapidly from one cow to another. About 30 infected cows have died in the last seven days. Farmers are worried about the disease.

According to the Department of Livestock Resources, this disease mainly occurs in cattle in the end of monsoon, beginning of autumn or beginning of spring. At this time, mosquitoes and flies are carried in the favorable environment for the spread of the disease. 

It is now the post-autumn period in Bangladesh and after a few days, the beginning of winter although nature is feeling the cold in advance. Other times, no outbreak of this disease was seen in cows at this time, but this time, cows are suddenly affected in several areas including the municipality in the last two days.

According to field sources, one of Abul Hossain of Chamtarpar Village of the municipality, one of Tamez Uddin, one of Abdul Awal, one of Shamchul Haque, one of Vitar Abul Haque of Garabana of Bhitrabandha Union, one of Shahajul, one of Nurul Islam of Sarkarpara, one of Bashir Rahman, one of salam, one of Nuru Miar of Telipara, one of Ruhul Amin, one of Abdul Malek, one of Mohsin Ali, one of Amin Miar of Bania Para of Hasnabad Union, one of Shibu Sarkar of Kaya Para, one of Abdul Gafur Miar of Mominpur Village, one of Abdul of Bhavananderkuti Village of Kaliganj Union, one of Kader, one of Jasmat Ali of Sahebganj Village, one of Babu Mia of Shalmara Village of Berubari Union and about 30 cows of several other villages have died in recent times. 

Among these, the number of cows and calves is high. Many others are infected almost at home or on the farm. The condition of some of the cows is alarming.

Abdul Awal of the municipality said that all of his three cows have been affected by LSD. Out of this, one cow died on Monday. I am worried about whether the rest can be saved even if treatment is given.

Tamiz Uddin and his family from the same area spend their days in concern about the sick cow for fear of losing their wealth.

He said, "We are poor people. Cows and goats are our wealth. One of these deaths caused a lot of financial loss. I don't know how to compensate for the loss. The rest are also sick." 

Many farmers of different areas including Jasmat, Babu Mia said the same thing.

Upazila Livestock Resource Officer Dr Shahidul Islam said that this disease is more common in cows during the summer. But this time, this disease appeared in the beginning of winter. Every day many farmers are coming with infected cows. 

"Since we do not have the vaccine for this disease, we are sending them away with necessary advice", he further said. 
Besides, if the cold increases, the incidence of LSD disease will decrease, he added.
