A Bangladesh national was shot dead by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) along Panchagarh border on Friday.
The incident happened at a place between the Sub Pillars Numbers 8 and 9 of the main pillar No. 751 on Mominpara in Haribhasa union under Sadar upazila in Panchagarh district and Singpara of India on Friday morning.
The victim was identified as Anwar Hossain, 40, son of Rafiqul Islam of Debnagar area under Tentulia upazila in the district.
According to BGB and locals, Anwar allegedly went to India late Thursday night with a few others to bring his cows. On Friday morning, while they were returning with cows, BSF members chased them inside the Indian border. At that time, locals heard several gunshots.
Meanwhile, upon hearing the gunshots and to deter the smugglers, members of the BGB camp in Panchagarh also fired eight blank rounds. Later, the BSF took Anwar's body from the scene.
Nilphamari 56 BGB Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Sheikh Md Badruddoza said, "We will strongly protest against the incident. The process of bringing back the body through a flag meeting is underway."
After the incident, a smuggled Indian cow was seized from the border area of Bangladesh.
A flag meeting will be called to bring back the body, the BGB official said, adding that they will formally protest the incident.
