The High Court (HC) on Wednesday allowed a plea filed by the late BNP leader Abul Harris Chowdhury, political adviser to former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, to re-bury his remains in a graveyard of their choice.
The HC bench comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Mubina Asaf passed the order after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) submitted its report before the court confirming that a DNA test conducted on the remains exhumed from a grave in Savar, identified as Mahmudur Rahman, has matched those of the family of BNP leader Abul Harris Chowdhury.
Allowing a petition filed by Chowdhury's daughter Samira Tanjin Chowdhury, the High Court on September 5 passed the order, asking CID to exhume the remains from the graveyard at the Jamia Khatamun Nabiyeen Madrasa in Savar and cross check it's DNA with the family members of the late BNP leader.
Chowdhury's family members for long were claiming that the body buried in 2021 in that graveyard under the name of Mahmudur Rahman, was indeed of Abul Harris Chowdhury.
Following the court's order, CID exhumed the remains from the grave on October 16 and cross-checked it's DNA with the family members of Harris Chowdhury, whose result recently came positive.
Abul Hasan's daughter Samira Tanjin Chowdhury said, "As a daughter, it is deeply painful and distressing to live with doubts about my father's death. Even now, people ask if he has really passed away! We are being harassed. That is why I turned to the court to put an end to this, and the court has not disappointed us."
