Road mishaps claim 18 lives in 10 dists

A total of 18 people have been killed and several others injured in separate road accidents in 10 districts - Mymensingh, Chuadanga, Chapainawabganj, Naogaon, Thakurgaon, Brahmanbaria, Barishal, Moulvibazar, Dhaka and Gopalganj, in two days. 

GAFARGAON, MYMENSINGH: A police official was killed in a road accident in Gafargaon Upazila of the district on Tuesday.

The accident occurred in Bhairail area on the Gafargaon-Bhaluka road of the upazila at night.

In addition to the casualty of the policeman, several others were also injured in the crash.

The deceased was identified as Fahim Ahmad Zidan, 22, son of Mohammad Ruhul Amin, hailed from neighbouring Mahesh Kura Village in Nandail Upazila of the district.

According to the police, Fahim Ahmad Zidan was serving in the Police Headquarters of Dhaka South. He was returning home after travelling through Gafargaon from Bhaluka when the accident occurred.

Dr Moon, the attending physician at Gafargaon Upazila Health Complex, confirmed that the death.

CHUADANGA: Two people including a minor girl were killed and another injured in separate road accidents in Sadar and Jibannagar upazilas of the district on Tuesday.

A man was killed in a road accident in Sadar Upazila in the evening.

The accident took place near Hijalgari Health Complex on the Hijalgari-Nehalpur road under the upazila at around 7:30 pm.

The deceased was identified as Selim, 30, son of Najeem Uddin, a resident of Harishpur Village in Sadar Upazila.

Police and local sources said that Selim was going to a local market at Hijalgari from the house in the evening riding on his human hauler. On the way, the vehicle overturned after losing its control over the steering near Hijalgari Health Complex at around 7:30 pm, which left him dead on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the body from the scene and sent it to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

In-Charge of Hijalgari Police Outpost Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Amirul Islam confirmed the incident, adding that a case was filed with Chuadanga Sadar Police Station (PS) in this connection.

On the other hand, a minor girl was killed and another injured in another road accident in Jibannagar Upazila of the district on Tuesday evening.

The accident took place on the Andalbariya-Hasadah road in the upazila at around 6 pm.

The deceased was identified as Lamia Katun, 5, daughter of Abdullah Gazi, a resident of Karchadanga Village under Jibannagar Upazila.

Police and local sources said that a human hauler hit Lamia Khatun near her house in the evening while she was crossing the Andalbariya-Hasadah road, the girl critically injured. 

Driver of the human hauler Hasib was also injured at that time.

Locals then rescued the injured and took them to a private clinic, where the on-duty doctor declared Lamia dead.

Being informed, police recovered the body and handed it over to the deceased's family members without an autopsy as per their request.

Sahapur Police Outpost SI Mehedi Hasan confirmed the incident, adding that no case was filed in this connection.

CHAPAINAWABGANJ: An elderly pedestrian was killed after being hit by a motorcycle in Sadar Upazila of the district on Tuesday noon.

The accident took place in Lalapara area on the Chapainawabganj-Sonamasjid highway under the upazila at around 2:30 pm.
The deceased was identified as Fazlu, 65, an inhabitant of Moharajpur Goaltuli Village in the upazila.

According to local sources, a speedy motorbike hit Fazlu when he was crossing the road at Lalapara at around 2:30 pm, which left him critically injured.

He was then rescued by locals and taken to the Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.
Being informed, police recovered the body.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chapainawabganj Sadar Model PS Md Roisuddin confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this connection.

NAOGAON: Three people were killed in separate road accidents in Sadar and Mohadevpur upazilas of the district on Tuesday.
The accidents occurred in front of the Palli Bidyut Samity office in the district town at around 9:30 am and in Ranipukur area on the Naogaon-Rajshahi regional highway in Mohadevpur Upazila at around 5 am.

Of the deceased, two persons have been identified as Abul Kashem, 75, a resident of Bhabanigachhi Dewan Para Village under Sadar Upazila, and Sumon Mia, 40, hailed from Kamarnai Village in Sadar Upazila of Gaibandha, while the identity of another person could not be known immediately.

Naogaon Sadar Model PS SI Abu Taher said that elderly Abul Kashem was walking along the side of the road in front of Palli Bidyut Samity towards Baludanga Bus Stand in the morning. At that time, a fast-moving pickup van heading towards Naogaon Town hit him from behind. He died on the spot.

The process of taking legal action in the accident is going on in this regard, the SI added.

Meanwhile, two more people were killed in another road accident in Mohadevpur Upazila of the district on the same day.

Quoting locals, Mohadevpur PS OC Hashmat said that truck driver Sumon Mia was heading towards Rajshahi via Naogaon early in the morning with a truck loaded with hay. When he reached Ranipukur area on the way, the truck lost control over its steering and fell into roadside a ditch, which left truck driver Sumon and his helper dead on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies from the scene in the morning. 

However, efforts are underway to identify the deceased helper and necessary steps would be taken in this regard, the OC added.

THAKURGAON: A tragic road accident claimed the life of a schoolgirl in Sadar Upazila of the district while she was returning home after finishing her exam on Tuesday.

The collision between a truck and a battery-powered auto-rickshaw occurred at Kalitala on Thakurgaon Road in the afternoon. Four other people were also injured in the incident. 
 
The deceased was identified as Farhana Sarker, 14, daughter of Farhad Hossain, a resident of Kalitala Village under Rahimanpur Union in the upazila. She was a student of class eight at Thakurgaon Sugar Mills High School. 
 
Eyewitnesses and police said that the accident happened when a truck travelling from Shibganj Road collided head-on with an auto-rickshaw coming from Thakurgaon Road. Farhana died on the spot and the other passengers of the auto-rickshaw sustained injuries at that time. 
 
Residential Medical Officer (RMO) of Thakurgaon General Hospital Dr Rokibul Alam Chayon confirmed Farhana's death before she could be brought to the hospital. The RMO stated that the injured are receiving medical treatment with one in critical condition.  

Thakurgaon Sadar PS OC Shahidur Rahman confirmed the incident, saying that on information, police recovered the body and sent it to Thakurgaon General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

However, an unnatural death case has been filed with the PS and legal action would be taken in this connection, the OC added.

NABINAGAR, BRAHMANBARIA: A young man lost his life in a tragic motorcycle accident in Nabinagar Upazila of the district on Tuesday noon. 

The accident took place on the Radhika road near Brahmanhata Bridge under the upazila at around 1 pm. 

The deceased was identified as Rafi, 17, the youngest son of Samsu Mia, a resident of Alamnagar area in Nabinagar Municipality.  

According to police and local sources, Rafi along with his college friends went for a ride on Radhika Road in the morning. 

While riding at high speed, he lost control of his motorcycle and collided with the railing of the bridge. The impact left him critically injured.  

His friends immediately rushed him to Nabinagar Upazila Health Complex, where he received initial treatment. He was then referred to Comilla Medical College Hospital for advanced care, but Rafi succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.  
Being informed, police recovered the body.

Nabinagar PS OC Abdur Razzak confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this regard.

BARISHAL: A schoolboy and a minor child were killed in separate road accidents in Sadar and Hizla upazilas of the district in two days.

A tragic road accident claimed the life of a schoolboy and aspiring cricketer in Sadar Upazila on Tuesday. 
 
The deceased was identified as Ruhi, son of Md Hasan, a resident of Sagardi Band Road in the city.

It was known that Ruhi was cycling home after cricket practice when he collided with an army pickup truck, which left him critically injured. 

Locals then rescued the injured and rushed him to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctors at the emergency department declared him dead upon arrival. 
 
Kotwali Model PS OC Mizanur Rahman confirmed the incident, adding that police are investigating the circumstances of the accident.

Ruhi was a member of local Under-14 cricket team and his untimely death has cast a pall of grief over his family and community. 

Earlier, a minor child was killed after being hit by an auto-van in Hizla Upazila of the district on Monday.

The accident took place in Ward No. 3 Mauntala area under Guabaria Union in the upazila. 

The deceased was identified as Surya Roy, 2, son of Sajal Roy, a resident of the area.

The deceased's mother Samapti Roy said that Surya was playing on the house yard while she was gossiping with a neighbour. At one stage, Surya was hit by an-van in front of the house, which left him dead on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the body and handed it over to the deceased's family members without an autopsy as per their request.

However, the auto-van driver managed to flee the scene along with his vehicle soon after the accident.
Hizla PS OC Abul Kalam Azad confirmed the incident.

MOULVIBAZAR: Two motorcyclists were killed and another was injured in a head-on collision with a pickup van in Mosuria area of Rajnagar Upazila in the district on Monday. 

The accident occurred at night near Mosuria Madrasa on the Rajnagar-Fenchuganj regional highway under the upazila.  

The deceased were identified as Sakin Ahmed, 19, of Haldigul Village, and Rafi Ahmed, 21, a resident of Suprakandi Village under Uttarbhag Union in the upazila. A rider, named Raju Dharm, 18, from Kholagaon Village, sustained injuries and was rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for treatment.  

According to local and police sources, three friends were riding a motorcycle from their hometown towards Moulvibazar. At Mosuria, their bike collided head-on with a pickup van travelling from Rajnagar to Fenchuganj. Sakin and Rafi died on the spot, while Raju was critically injured.  

Being informed, police have recovered the bodies of the deceased and sent those to Moulvibazar General Hospital morgue for autopsies.  

Rajnagar PS OC Shah Mohammad Mubassir confirmed the incident, saying, "We have seized the pickup van and the motorcycle. The driver of the pickup van fled the scene after the accident."

An investigation is underway in this regard and efforts are going on to locate the driver and ascertain the circumstances, the OC added.

SAVAR, DHAKA: A road accident in Savar Upazila of the district claimed the lives of three people when a bus collided head-on with a private car on Monday noon. 

The accident took place in Boliarpur area on the Dhaka-Aricha highway under the upazila at around 2:30 pm. Two other persons were also injured at that time.

The deceased were identified as Mujibur Rahman, Nazimuddin, and Ibrahim. All of them were residents of Gandaria area in Savar. 
Shahin, nephew of one of the deceased, said that five people including the driver were travelling in the private car at the time of the accident. The crash left three dead on the spot while two others sustained critical injuries. 

Savar Highway PS OC Sawgatul Alam confirmed the incident, saying, "We have been informed about the fatalities and are currently working to recover the bodies. A team has been dispatched to the scene."

The circumstances surrounding the collision are still unclear and the highway police are investigating the cause of the crash. The injured passengers have been rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment and efforts are being made to contact their families, the OC added.

GOPALGANJ: A tragic road accident in the district claimed the lives of two individuals and left ten others injured on Monday morning.  

The accident took place near Sharifpara Bus Stand at Gopinathpur on the Dhaka-Khulna highway at around 9 am.

The deceased were identified as Elias Kazi, 55, owner of a local bus and a resident of Gopinathpur Village in Gopalganj, and Masum Mia, 45, an auto-van driver, hailed from Monirampur in Jashore.  

According to Gopalganj Fire Service Senior Station Officer Ariful Haque, the accident happened when a Dhaka-bound bus of 'Sohag Paribahan' from Khulna collided with a stationary local bus of 'Maa Enterprise' at high speed. The impact caused the local bus to hit a van parked in front, crushing it before veering into a roadside ditch.  

The auto-van driver was killed on the spot, while ten passengers of the local bus sustained injuries. Rescue teams, later, recovered the body of the bus owner from beneath the overturned bus. Three of the injured have been admitted to Gopalganj General Hospital for treatment. 

Law enforcers, however, have seized the 'Sohag Paribahan' bus involved in the accident.

Kashiani Highway PS SI Md Roman Molla confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this connection.
