PATGRAM, LALMONIRHAT, Dec 4: Police recovered a grenade from the house of a local farmer in Baura Union under Patgram Upazila of the district.
Farmer Lebu Mia, 25, initially mistook the grenade for treasure and kept it hidden before handing it over to the authorities.
According to police sources, approximately a month back, Lebu Mia discovered the old grenade while excavating soil along the Saniyazan River in Baura Nabingar area. Believing it to be a valuable artefact, he brought it home and attempted to break it open using various tools.
On Sunday night, realising that it was not treasure but likely a grenade, he informed the local Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) outpost in Nabingar. BGB Camp Commander Havildar Mujibur Rahman then alerted the Patgram police.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Patgram Police Station Ashrafuzzaman Sarkar confirmed the incident on Monday. He said that the grenade is small enough to fit in a hand and appears to be quite old.
"The grenade has been safely recovered and secured. We have informed the army's explosive disposal unit to neutralise it," OC Ashrafuzzaman added.
