Runaway migrants get chance to legalise Saudi stay

Saudi Arabia has provided an opportunity for 'Huroob', or runaway expatriates, to legalise their stay in the Gulf kingdom.

Migrants classified as illegals due to various reasons, including separation or escape from sponsors and employers, have until Jan 29, 2025 to legalise their status, according to the Bangladesh Embassy in Riyadh.

Mamunur Rashid, a legal assistant at the embassy, said that expatriates who fell under the Huroob category as of November this year can complete the process.

"Saudi authorities have informed us that individuals previously marked as 'Huroob' until Nov 30 can now legalise their status. The window for this opportunity is from Nov 1 to Jan 29."

The process for legalising the status of runaway or absconding expatriates will follow the procedure set by the Saudi government. However, expatriates will need to submit the required documents and relevant details.

To support expatriates, the embassy has set up information services. Expatriates can contact the embassy for guidance and necessary assistance.

The Bangladesh Embassy has urged all expatriates to take advantage of the opportunity and advised those who have not yet taken steps to legalise their status to do so as soon as possible.    —bdnews24.com
