Teesta Bridge to be opened in March next year

GAIBANDHA, Dec 1: Under-construction Teesta Bridge which is being built by Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) over the Teesta River between Horipur Kheyaghat under Sundarganj Upazila of the district and Chilmari Kheyaghat under Kurigram District would be opened for vehicular and public movement in March of the coming year.

This was disclosed by Chief Engineer of LGED Gopal Krishna Debnarth after he visited the bridge on Friday afternoon as the chief guest. As 95 per cent work of the bridge has been completed and the remaining work would be finished soon, the bridge would be opened for vehicular and public movement in the month of next March, it is expected, he also said. Earlier, the chief engineer visited the construction sites of the bridge on foot and instructed the concerned to finish the remaining work as quickly as possible so that it can be opened in March.

Project Director Engineer Abdul Malek, consultant and former superintendent engineer Shahidul Islam Pramanik,  Dhaka headquarters project director Golam Hawla, Executive Engineer Sabiul Islam, Sundarganj Upazila Engineer Abdul Mannaf and other officials coming from Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Rangpur accompanied him during his visit. 

Noted that A Chinese contractor is constructing the 1,490-metre long PC girder bridge over the Teesta River in a bid to create road communication between Gaibandha and Kurigram districts. The bridge is being built with the financial support of Saudi Development Foundation, and it will cost Tk 730 crore and 85 lakh.  Of them, 279 crore 47 lakh taka will be spent on the construction of the main bridge. Tk 10 crore 25 lakh will be spent on road construction, Tk 8 crore 55 lakh on river management, and Tk 6 crore will be spent on land acquisition. The bridge will have 30 pillars out of which 28 pillars will be in the inner part of the river, and 2 pillars will be in the outer part. On both sides of the bridge, the river will be controlled by 3.15 km. Roads will be constructed on both sides of the bridge 57. 3 kilometres; out of this, 7.3 km is from Chilmari Matikata Junction to Bridge and 50 km from Dhaperhat under Sadullapur Upazila to Haripur Bridge.

Over 100 km distance between Gaibandha and Kurigram districts would be reduced when the bridge would be opened for public movement, sources said.  

The bridge would play active role to reach the agriculture products in Rangpur City and Kurigram and Gaibandha towns for timely sale and helping the growers earn economic profit,  sources added.
