Five minor children including two siblings drowned in separate incidents in four districts - Sherpur, Naogaon, Madaripur and Pirojpur, in recent times.
NALITABARI, SHERPUR: A two-and-a-half-year-old minor boy drowned in a pond in Nalitabari Upazila of the district on Saturday morning.
The incident took place in Bonpara Village under the upazila at around 10 am.
The deceased was identified as Abdullah, son of Omar Faruq, a resident of the aforesaid area.
Local and the deceased's family sources said that Abdullah was playing on their house yard in the morning. At one stage, he fell in a pond next to the house while his family members were unaware of it.
Later on, the family members rescued Abdullah from the pond at around 10:30 am and immediately took him to Nalitabari Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared the child dead.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nalitabari Police Station (PS) Sanwar Hossain confirmed the incident, adding that an unnatural death case was filed with the PS in this connection.
PORSHA, NAOGAON: A minor child drowned in a water reservoir near a brick kiln in Porsha Upazila of the district on Thursday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Abu Talha, 5, son of Jasim Uddin, a resident of Nitpur West Diyarapara area in the upazila.
According to local and the deceased's family sources, Jasim Uddin took his young son to work at a nearby brick kiln in the area in the afternoon. While there, the child accidentally fell into a water reservoir at the kiln without anyone noticing.
Later in the evening, another worker discovered Talha's body floating while washing his hands in the reservoir. His body was retrieved from the water shortly after.
Porsha PS OC Shahin Reza confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken if any written complaint is received from the deceased's family members in this regard.
SHIBCHAR, MADARIPUR: A five-year-old girl and her three-year-old brother drowned in a pond in Shibchar Upazila of the district on Thursday morning.
The incident took place in Korom Ali Hazir Kandi Village under Dattapara Union of the upazila at around 11 am.
The deceased were identified as Safna Aktar and her brother Abdur Rahim, children of Saudi Arabia expatriate Sanwar Hossain, residents of the aforesaid area.
It was known that the siblings fell into the pond next to their house while playing on its bank in the morning. Sensing their absence, the family members began searching and found them floating in the pond.
They were then rescued and immediately taken to Shibchar Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared the duo dead.
Dr Tariqul Islam, a physician in the emergency department of the health complex, said that the duo had died before being brought to the hospital.
Shibchar PS OC Moktar Hossain confirmed the incident.
PIROJPUR: A minor boy drowned in Nesarabad Upazila of the district on Monday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Arian, 4, son of Md Motaleb Mia, a resident of Pashchim Shohagdal Village in Nesarabad Upazila of the district.
According to the deceased's family members and locals, Arian was playing near a pond when he suddenly fell into the water in the afternoon.
After a search, his body was found in the pond. He was then rescued from there and quickly taken to Nesarabad Upazila Health Complex, where Dr Md Asaduzzaman declared him dead.
