A nine-months-pregnant woman was hacked to death reportedly by her husband, who later took his own life by hanging at Bhaluka upazila in Mymensingh district on Friday.
The incident occurred on Friday night around 9 PM in Palgaon village under Kachina union in the upazila.
The deceased were identified as Ratna Begum, 30, daughter of Moktar Hossain of Palgaon village and her husband Kamrul Islam, 35, son of Sirajul Islam of Barta village, in the same upazila.
According to police and family sources, Kamrul brought his pregnant wife Ratna to her parents' house in Palgaon on Friday afternoon, as she was nearing her due date for delivering their second child. After dinner, the couple went to sleep in a separate room, leaving their first child with Ratna's mother, Monowara Begum. Around 10 PM, the child began crying. When Monowara went to check on the couple, she found the door locked from inside. Repeated knocking went unanswered, raising suspicion.
Upon breaking down the door, family members found Ratna's body lying on the floor with stab wounds and Kamrul hanging from the ceiling with a scarf around his neck.
Bhaluka Model Police Station officer-in-charge Shamsul Huda Khan said, "Preliminary investigations suggest the incident might have been triggered by domestic disputes."
Both bodies were recovered and taken to the police station for further investigation. Authorities have launched an inquiry to ascertain the exact reasons behind the incident.
