Police have arrested a woman in connection with the death of a five-year-old indigenous child, whose body was found floating in a pond at Gomostapur upazila in Chapainawabganj.
The arrested woman, identified as Suravi, 20, is the wife of Gopal Toppo, the child's elder brother.
Nepal Toppo, son of Dulal Toppo from Sheikhpura village in Parbatipur Union, had been missing since November 16. Despite extensive searches by his family, no trace of him was found, prompting them to file a general diary (GD) with Gomostapur police on November 17.
On Wednesday (November 20), Nepal's body was discovered in a pond near a temple adjacent to the family's house.
Gomostapur Police Station officer-in-charge Khairul Bashar stated that during initial questioning, Suravi admitted to her involvement in the child's death. Based on her confession, police arrested her on Thursday.
"She has been sent to court for her confessional statement. If she provides a statement under Section 164 of the Penal Code, the existing unnatural death case will be converted into a murder case," OC Khairul Bashar said.
Further investigations are ongoing to uncover the motives and exact circumstances behind the crime.
