Police have arrested five leaders of the Mohila Awami League in connection with an attack on anti-discrimination student protests in Dhaka’s Pallabi area.
Police arrested them on Thursday.
Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (Media) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), confirmed the arrests.
The detained women are Babli Begum, 43, a leader of the Pallabi Thana Ward-6 unit of Mohila Awami League; Sabina Yasmin Juthi, 38, general secretary of the same unit; Rita Akhter, 40, organizational secretary; Nazma Akhter Sathi, 30, vice-president; and Khadija Begum, 34, assistant organizational secretary.
According to Pallabi police, the incident occurred on August 4, 2024, near the Popular-2 Diagnostic Center in Mirpur-10. The victim, Md Abid, was participating in a protest demanding the government's resignation when he was severely injured in an attack by Awami League activists, who used firearms and other weapons against the demonstrators.
Abid was shot in his right eye and later received treatment at the National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital.
Following a complaint filed by Abid’s brother, Zinnat Sayeedi, a case was registered on November 12.
Using CCTV footage, the police were able to identify and arrest the suspects, who have since been sent to court.
