The government in an intensified drive against polythene shopping bags, has imposed Tk 19,29,900 in fined and seized 40,000 kilograms of polythene in 166 raids conducted nationwide since November 3.
Speaking during a monitoring operation at Dhaka's New Market Kitchen Market on Friday, Tapan Kumar Biswas, additional secretary and chair of the Ministry of Environment's Monitoring Committee, emphasized strict enforcement of the ban on polythene. "Non-compliance will result in further action. Citizens are urged to use eco-friendly alternatives," he stated.
During the operation, 349 establishments were penalized for violating the ban. Biswas highlighted the importance of public participation, noting that awareness campaigns, promotion of alternatives and enforcement efforts are running simultaneously to tackle polythene use.
"Public awareness is growing, and we are seeing gradual improvements," Biswas added, praising market committee members for acknowledging the environmental damage caused by polythene and committing to sustainable practices.
The drive involved officials from the Ministry of Environment, Department of Environment, law enforcement agencies and media representatives.
