The deep depression over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas has moved northwestwards and intensified into a cyclonic storm "Fengal" over the same areas, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) says in a special weather bulletin.
The special weather bulletin was signed by meteorologist Shahanaj Sultana on behalf the BMD director at 5:00pm on Friday (November 29).
The bulletins says that the deep depression was centred at 3:00pm on Friday (November 29, 2024) about 1,635 kms southwest of Chittagong Port, 1,585 kms southwest of Cox's Bazar Port, 1,510 kms southwest of Mongla Port and 1,512 kms southwest of Payra Port.
It is likely to move northwesterly direction further and cross north Tamil Nadu coast around Saturday noon (November 30, 2024).
Maximum sustained wind speed within 54 kms of the cyclone centre is about 62 kph, rising to 88kph in gusts/squalls. Sea will remain very rough near the cyclone centre.
Maritime port of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to lower Distant Cautionary Signal No. 1, instead of hoist distant warning signal No. 2.
All fishing boats and trawlers over north Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice.
