42 detained on different charges in 7 districts

A total of 42 people have been detained on different charges in separate drives in seven districts - Jashore, Gazipur, Dhaka, Noakhali, Chattogram, Bhola and Mymensingh, in recent times.

JASHORE: Joint forces arrested an extortionist along with arms in Chaugacha Upazila of the district on Wednesday night.
The arrested man is terrorist Selim, alias extortionist Selim, a resident of Vadra Village in the upazila.
Local sources said that Selim had become unrestrained over the last couple of months. The lives of the local people have been miserable e due to his extortion, snatching, and various illegal activities. 

Payal Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chaugacha Police Station (PS), confirmed the matter.

KALIGANJ, GAZIPUR: Police on Wednesday arrested a death row convict in connection with the sensational murder case in Kaliganj Upazila of the district, after more than six years.

Arrested convict Falan, 57, sentenced to death in 2018, was apprehended on Wednesday afternoon in Munshurpur (Tekpara) Village of Kaliganj Municipality.  

Kaliganj PS OC Md Alauddin confirmed the matter.  

The deceased Billal alias Billu, 45, a labour leader from Ishwarpur Village in Bahadur Sadi Union, was brutally murdered on December 7, 1995, in Ishwarpur Bazaar following a dispute involving a household worker accused of theft. Billu was lured to the market by one of the accused where he was fatally attacked with sharp weapons and slaughtered.  

The deceased's brother Md Jalal Uddin filed a murder case with Kaliganj PS naming 13 suspects. Following an investigation, police submitted a charge-sheet against the accused in 1997.  

After 23 years of legal proceedings, the Gazipur Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 delivered its verdict on April 23, 2018. The court sentenced all 13 accused to death and imposed a fine of Tk 10,000 on each of them. 
 
Following the 2018 verdict, Falon, a resident of Bahadur Sadi Village and son of late Taleb Ali, had been in hiding for over six years. 

Acting on a tip-off, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Kaliganj PS conducted a raided Munshurpur and arrested him. 
 
OC Md Alauddin stated, "The convict was arrested in the afternoon and will be presented before the court on Thursday for legal proceedings." 

SAVAR, DHAKA: Five people were arrested on different charges in Savar Upazila of the district.

Police arrested a youth accused of fatally stabbing his friend to death over an unpaid debt in Savar.

The accused Rony Pramanik, 26, was apprehended on Tuesday with the weapon used in the murder-a rusty steel pair of scissors-following a police operation in Pabna District. The incident took place on the night of November 8 in Aminbazar Union of Savar.  

According to police, Rony stabbed his friend Mukhtar Hossain, 34, due to a dispute over a loan of Tk 1,500. The altercation occurred in an open area near an auto-rickshaw garage at Borodeshi Paschimpara.  

Mukhtar, originally from Muradnagar in Cumilla District, worked as a bus helper in Dhaka and lived in a rented house in the same area as the accused. Rony, hailing from Pabna's Bera upazila, was also a tenant in the same locality.  

At a press briefing on Wednesday, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) (Savar Circle) Shahinur Kabir said, "Roni admitted during preliminary questioning that he killed Mukhtar over the unpaid loan. The deceased's wife Sahanaz Akter filed a murder case with Savar Model PS, which initiated the investigation."  

Under the supervision of DIG Ahmad Muyid, a special team led by OC Md Jewel Mia, SI Faisal Alam and their associates tracked the suspect using digital technology. They conducted a drive at Aminpur in Pabna and arrested Rony near a tea shop at Raghunathpur Mor on Tuesday.

During the raid, police recovered the steel scissors used in the murder. Rony has confessed to the crime and is now in custody. He has been charged in the murder case and will face further legal proceedings, the ASP added.

Meanwhile, four individuals posing as members of Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) were arrested by locals in Savar for extorting money by threatening the public. 

The arrests took place on Tuesday in Police Town area of Savar, where the police apprehended the four suspects and took them to the Savar Model PS.

The arrested are: Habib, 50, from Gopalganj, Mizan, 55, a fake DGFI captain is a resident of Jashore; Mohammad Nasir, 35, a driver who hailed from Mirpur Kalapani; and Kader Sikdar, 42, from Narail, who was also involved in the scam. However, the leader of the group Yaz Uddin Montu and his accomplice Manik remain at large.

According to the victims, the fake DGFI officers would approach them while pretending to be officers of the DGFI. Abdul Kaium, one of the victims, explained that Mizan, pretending to be a DGFI captain, demanded Tk 1 lakh from him. When Kaium said he could only afford Tk 10,000, they agreed to take Tk 10,000 initially with the rest to be paid in seven days.

Shamim, an auto-rickshaw garage owner, shared that the impostors, pretending to be DGFI agents, demanded Tk 5 lakh from him for allegedly operating an illegal auto-rickshaw. When he refused to pay, they threatened him with various forms of intimidation.

Another victim Faruk Hossain Parvez from Rajfulbari stated that the impostors contacted him over a land dispute, falsely claiming to be DGFI officers from Dhaka headquarters. 

They demanded that he vacate the property which had been in his family for generations. The perpetrators called him again, demanding Tk 1 lakh, threatening him with imprisonment if the money was not paid within seven days.

Savar PS OC Sirajul Islam Sabuj confirmed that the four individuals were arrested with the help of locals, police, and real DGFI members. Fake identification cards and various materials were seized from the suspects. Police filed a case against the arrested individuals and legal proceedings are underway.

NOAKHALI: Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) arrested 14 members of Fakhrul dacoit gang along with firearms and local made sharp weapons from Hatiya Upazila in the district early Monday.

They were arrested from Char Ghasia Union under Harni Union in the upazila at around 3 am. 
The arrested individuals are: Biplab Chandra Das, 46; Shimul Chanda Das, 22; Miton Chandra Das, 21; Bhibesh Mozumdar, 38; Md Abdullah, 26; Riaz Uddin, 22; Md Nizam Uddin, 60; Ronojit Chanra Das, 43; Md Mamun, 28; Rajib Chandra Das, 27; Md Imran, 40; Md Kashem, 53; and Md Riaj, 24.

Media Officer of the Coast Guard Headquarters Lieutenant Commander Khandaker Munif Taki confirmed the matter.

He said that for several days, members of the notorious Fakhrul robbers' gang has been carrying out various heinous crimes such as robbery, extortion and fishermen hostage in the Meghna River and adjacent chars under Hatiya Upazila.

On information, a special operation was conducted by BCG in the area adjacent to Baro Aulia Bazar and arrested the 14 members of Fakhrul dacoit gang. At that time, BCG seized three firearms, 13 local sharp weapons, three deer horns, 18 mobile phones, one watch and Tk 48,000 in cash from them.

Later on, the arrested robber along with the seized firearms, weapons and other materials were handed over to Hatiya PS, the BCG official added.

CHATTOGRAM: Five people were arrested on different charges in the district recently.

A large amount of Saudi rial has been seized from a passenger of Dubai-bound US-Bangla Airlines at Shah Amanat International Airport.

Passenger Dulal Jamaddar was detained along with the foreign currency after searching the hand luggage of him. He is the son of Mansur Ali Jamaddar of Shibchar in Madaripur District.

The quantity of Saudia rial seized from the passenger was 9 lakh 21 thousand 5 hundred worth Tk 2,93,86,000. Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport's public relations officer Ibrahim Khalil confirmed it.

He said, the crew of BS-343 flight of US-Bangla Airlines via Dhaka and Chattogram offloaded Dubai-bound connecting flight's passenger Dulal Jamaddar due to his suspicious movement inside the aircraft on Tuesday morning. 

Then US-Bangla Airlines' authorities contacted with the security section of Chattogram Airport with his hand luggage. 

The Security Section's duty officers Badsha Faisal and his team questioned him initially. At one stage, the passenger admitted that he was carrying foreign currency in his hand luggage.

Searching the passenger's hand luggage, the Customs officials found 9 lakh 21 thousand 5 hundred Saudi rial equivalent to Tk 2,93,86,000. A case was filed against the detained passenger.

Joint forces in another drive arrested two people along with a pistol and 24 machetes at Boalkhali upazila in the district. The forces, consisting of police and army personnel, arrested the duo from Ward No. 3 under Boalkhali municipal area. The arrested are Arafat, 32 and Mohiuddin Hamim, 18. 

Acting on a tip-off, a team of law enforcement conducted a drive in the area and arrested them at Badu Hazi's house. During the operation, law enforcement agencies recovered the arms from their possession. 

The arrested were handed over to the Boalkhali PS for further legal procedures, he added.

Meanwhile, police arrested a Juba League activist, who opened fire at protesters during the recent mass uprising in Chattogram on August 4, a day before the fall of the Awami League-led government.

The arrestee was Touhidul Islam alias Hori Touhid alias Farid, 32, known as the follower of former Chandgaon Ward Councillor Esbarul Haq.

Quazi Md Tareque Aziz, additional deputy commissioner (public relations) of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police said that acting on a tip-off, police arrested Touhidul from Kamal Nagar area of Satkhira.

Touhidul is accused in 12 cases including five murder cases filed with Chandgaon PS.

Police, in another drive, arrested the prime accused in a case relating to gang-raping of teenage girl at Mahamaya Ecopark in Mirsarai Upazila.

Mirsrai PS OC Abdul Quader confirmed the detention.

The arrested is Riaz Uddin, 28, a resident of Rahmatabad Village of the upazila. The other accused are: Farhad, 27, son of Shahidul Islam, from Mirsarai, and Md Robin, 25, from Noakhali.

According to police, the incident took place at Mahamaya Ecopark, where the victim and her friend, from Feni, were visiting.

They had ventured into a remote area near Mahamaya Lake unaware that they were being followed.

The three young men allegedly have been taking photos of the girl and her friend from a distance.

At one point, they restrained her friend and violated her, said the police.

Upon receiving the information, police quickly responded to the scene, rescued the victim, and took them to the PS for their safety and further investigation.

BHOLA: Six people were arrested in Char Fasson and Tajumuddin upazilas of the district recently. 

Three fugitives accused including the main suspect in a murder case in Char Fasson Upazila of the district were arrested from Bogura. The arrests were made during a joint operation by RAB-8 and RAB-12 in Maltianagar Nataipara area of Bogura Sadar.

The arrested are Babul, the prime accused, along with his mother, Samorth Bhanu, and his wife, Hasna Bibi. All three are residents of Ward No. 4 in Char Jamuna Village under Dularhat PS in Char Fasson of Bhola. 

The information was confirmed by Lieutenant Md Shahriar Avi, commander of RAB-8 Bhola Camp.

Lieutenant Md Shahriar Avi stated that the joint operation utilised advanced technology to locate and arrest the suspects from a rented house in Bogura. He further mentioned that the suspects would be transferred to Dularhat PS.

Earlier, on September 4 in 2024, when a land dispute escalated into a violent attack, Siraj, 55, was severely injured in an ambush allegedly led by Babul, Barak, Mannan, and Samorth Bhanu. Siraj was attacked with a pair of cloth-cutting scissors and succumbed to his injuries while being taken to the hospital.

On September 5, Siraj's son Hasnain filed a murder case with Dularhat PS naming six suspects including Babul, Barak, Samorth Bhanu, Hasna Bibi, Mawlana Fazlul Haque and Bilkis Begum. 

Police had previously arrested Barak, Babul's father, who was subsequently sent to jail by the court.

Earlier, three individuals were arrested in connection with the murder of a freedom fighter in Tajumuddin Upazila. 

The suspects are named in the FIR filed on August 7, 2024, and were taken into custody following a police operation.

The arrests were made with the help of technology in Chandana Chowrasta area under Gazipur GMP Basan police jurisdiction. With these recent arrests, a total of five people have been detained in the case.

Police personnel from Tajumuddin PS presented the three detainees in court. 

The arrested are: Fazlul Haque alias Fayez Uddin, 37, Farid Uddin, 45, Zakir, 26, Abdul Haque, 60, and Zahir, 35. Meanwhile, two other suspects, Laboni Akter, 30, and Sharmin Akter, 32, remain at large.

SI Abdul Quddus, the investigating officer, said that on the night of August 5 at around 9pm, Mahmudullah Mia, a former union parishad member from North Chachra Village in Chachra Union's Ward No. 1, was brutally assaulted and hacked by Abdul Rob and his family members. 

The attack left him severely injured, and he was declared dead upon arrival at Tajumuddin Upazila Health Complex.

Following this, Mahmudullah's son Ahsan Ullah filed a murder case with Tajumuddin PS, which initiated the investigation and subsequent arrests.

HALUAGHAT, MYMENSINGH: Police arrested 10 people on different charges in separate drives in Haluaghat Upazila of the district recently.

The arrested are: Ubaidul Haque, Swapon Mia, Jahur Uddin, Fazar Ali, Saidul Islam, Hasen Ali, Jahangir Hossain, Jakir Hossain, Mozammel Haque Mamun and Md Shahin. 

Police sources said that the law enforcers arrested them from various areas.
