A schoolgirl and a young man allegedly committed suicide in separate incidents in two districts - Chandpur and Brahmanbaria, in two days.

CHANDPUR: A schoolgirl reportedly committed suicide after being unable to pay school fees ahead her annual exams in Hajiganj Upazila of the district on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in the morning in Kondra Village under Barokul East Union of the upazila.

Deceased Jannatul Ferdous, 14, daughter of Monir Hossain of the area, was an eighth grader at Belchong High School.

According to locals, she consumed pesticide which made her critically ill. Her family rushed her to Hajiiganj Upazila Health Complex for initial treatment.

After an emergency wash, her condition worsened and she was referred to Comilla Medical College Hospital. But, she died on the way to Chandpur Sadar Hospital.

It was known that Jannatul took the drastic step after being unable to pay the fees for her upcoming exams.

Her family, however, denied this claim when approached by the press.

Jannatul's father Monir Hossain mentioned that his daughter had been physically unwell and was slightly behind in her studies.

He stated that he had told her to repeat the eighth grade as she had not paid the exam fees which made her participation in the exams uncertain. However, before he could arrange the payment, she took this tragic step.

The secondary level annual exams are set to begin on Thursday, and schools in the area have been collecting outstanding fees in order to issue exam entry cards to students.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hajiiganj Police Station (PS) Mohammad Mohiuddin Faruq confirmed that investigating is going on and legal action would be taken in accordance with the findings.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Tapas Shil also expressed concern over the suicide and assured that no student would be prevented from sitting exams due to unpaid fees.

The UNO directed all educational institutions to ensure that fees would not be an obstacle for students' participation in exams and encouraged parents to contact him if needed.

NABINAGAR, BRAHMANBARIA: A young man allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison over his love affair in Nabinagar Upazila of the district on Tuesday afternoon.

Deceased Md Sagar Mia was the son of Mohammad Zakir Mia, a resident of Palpara under Nabinagar Municipality.

According to local sources, Sagar had been in a long-term relationship with a girl. When the girl's family discovered their affair, they disapproved and reportedly treated Sagar harshly.

Unable to bear the rejection and humiliation, Sagar consumed pesticide while sitting near an under-construction building of Nabinagar North Government Primary School.

He was then rescued and rushed to Nabinagar Upazila Health Complex by locals, where the on-duty doctor referred him to Comilla Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. But, Sagar died on the way to the hospital.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Nabinagar PS OC Abdur Razzak confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this regard.
