Four people murdered in four districts

Four people including two women have been murdered in separate incidents in four districts - Thakurgaon, Bagerhat, Barishal and Sylhet, in four days.

THAKURGAON: A clash between the Santal community and local Bengali residents in Haripur Upazila of the district has resulted in the death of a 60-year-old ethnic man and left at least 20 others injured.

The incident occurred in Karigaon Village under Haripur Union of the district on Wednesday afternoon. 
The deceased was identified as Kandhan Soren, son of Rentu Soren, a resident of Shihipur Village under Dangipara Union in the upazila.

Among the injured were both members of the indigenous Santal community and local Bengali residents. Some of the injured persons are: Pobirul Islam, Nur Islam, Jahidul Islam, Ashik, Jahangir Alam, Habibur Rahman and Shafi. From the Santal community, the injured were identified as Sushila Soren, Mariam Soren, Laksiram Hasda, and Shaniram Hasda. However, many of the injured remain unidentified.

According to police and local sources, the clash stemmed from a longstanding land dispute between the Santal community and local Bengali residents. The dispute has lasted over 50 years over 39 bighas of land in Karigaon Mouza of the union. On Wednesday afternoon, members of the Santal community gathered to build houses on the disputed land. Local Bengali residents attempted to stop the construction, which escalated into a violent confrontation. During the altercation, Kandhan Soren was killed, and around 20 individuals from both sides were injured.

Dangipara Union Parishad Chairman Ahsan Habib Chowdhury confirmed the incident.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Haripur Police Station (PS) Muhammed Shariful Islam stated that on information, police have recovered the body and sent it to Thakurgaon Adhunik Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. 

Following the autopsy, the body will be handed over to the deceased's family and a case has been filed with the PS in connection with the incident and an investigation is going on in this regard, the OC added.

BAGERHAT: A woman was killed and her daughter seriously injured by a youth over previous enmity in Mongla Upazila of the district on Monday.
 
The incident took place in Makardon area under Mongla Municipality in the evening.

The deceased was Sabita Rani Mallick, 50, wife of Sunil Mallick, a resident of the Mechher Shah road in Makradon area in the upazila town.

The injured person is Happy Mallick, 35, a third year BBA student and daughter of the deceased.
Happy Mallick said that one Tanmay Mandal, 35, son of Kalipada Mandal alias Kalu of the area, requested her to travel on his easy-bike about a month back. As she refused his proposal, Tanmay got angry. As a sequel to it, he entered their house on Wednesday evening and hacked Happy and Sabita Rani mercilessly. At one stage, Happy managed to flee the scene out of fear of being killed.

Later on, Sabita's unconscious body was found in a pond next to the house. After taken to Mongla Upazila Health Complex, Medical Officer of the hospital Dr Mousumi Yasmin confirmed the reason behind Sabita's death that is being thrown into the water in a critical condition and excessive bleeding.  
  
Being informed, police recovered the body at night and sent it to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. 
Mongla PS OC Md Anisur Rahman confirmed the incident on Tuesday, adding that the law enforcers are trying to detain the accused.

BARISHAL: A pregnant woman was strangled by her husband in Hizla Upazila of the district on Sunday night.
The deceased was identified as Suravi Begum, 20, wife of Parvez Chowkidar of Char Fasson Upazila in Bhola. She was the daughter of Sabuj Bagha of Majherchar Adarsha Village under Dhulkhola Union in Hizla Upazila of Barishal. 
It was known that Suravi Begum was three-month pregnant.

The deceased's family sources said that Suravi got married with Parvez Chowkidar, 25, son of Yusuf Chowkidar of Char Fasson Upazila in Bhola, about two years back. Parvez along with his three-month pregnant wife came to his father-in-law's house two weeks before. On Sunday night, the couple locked into an altercation, and at one stage, Parvez strangulated Suravi with a scarf, leaving her dead on the spot. Then, he fled away.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
However, locals apprehended Parvez from Ulania Launch Ghat in Mehendiganj Upazila of the district and handed over him to police. 

The deceased's father lodged a murder case with Hizla PS in this regard, and following this, police produced the accused before the court on Monday. 

Hizla PS OC Md Abul Kalam Azad confirmed the incident.

SYLHET: A Juba Dal activist was killed during a reported factional clash in Shahporan area of the city on Sunday night.  
Deceased Bilal Ahmed Munshi, 35, painter by profession, was a resident of Khadim area. He was affiliated with the Ward No. 34 unit of Juba Dal. 

Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Mohammad Saiful Islam said that the incident stemmed from ongoing tensions between two rival factions vying for territorial dominance in the area.  

The attack occurred at around 10:30 pm when members of an opposing faction allegedly assaulted Bilal with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor pronounced him dead upon arrival.  

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
The law enforcers have detained six individuals for questioning related to the clash.
 
However, no case has been filed yet in this connection, the official added.
