A five-year-old girl and her three-year-old brother drowned in a pond at Shibchar upazila in Madaripur district on Thursday morning.
The incident happened at around 11:00 am at Korom Ali Hazir Kandi village under Dattapara union in the upazila.
The deceased were identified as Safna Aktar and her brother Abdur Rahim, children of Saudi expatriate Sanower Hossain, residents of the area.
It was learnt that the siblings fell into the pond next to their house while playing on the bank. Sensing their absence, family members began searching and found them floating in the pond.
They were rescued and taken to Shibchar Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctors declared them dead.
Dr. Tariqul Islam, a physician in the emergency department of the complex, said the duo had died before being brought to the hospital.
Officer-in-charge of Shibchar Police Station Moktar Hossain confirmed the matter.
