RAJSHAHI, Nov 25: About 30 per cent of the water produced by Rajshahi WASA is being wasted every day, which in the words of the organization is a system loss.

In this, the organization is losing an average of more than eight crore of revenue per year. WASA has not been able to reduce the system loss even though this situation has been going on for several years.
According to WASA sources, the daily water demand in Rajshahi metropolis is 13 crore litres; on the other hand, water supply is 9.8 lakh litres. Out of this, system loss is more than 3 crore litres.

The data analysis of the last few years has shown that the water system loss of Rajshahi WASA is around 30 per cent. In five years, the organization has lost Tk 41,12,35,000 in revenue for water wastage due to faults in supply lines. Besides,  illegal connections at different places are also increasing the burden of system loss. Although 10 per cent system loss is considered acceptable, Rajshahi WASA is not able to come down to that level.

Locals said, the WASA water line has leaks at various places. Water is wasted from there throughout the day. Repeated written complaints did not work.

Representatives of the civil society said, the city-dwellers have to bear the burden of wastage of water. The company is not able to increase the quality of service despite increasing the price of water.

Mizanur Rahman, coordinator of Rajshahi Sujan, said that due to some corrupt people and contractors, these water systems are used elsewhere showing loss, and the burden of this waste is coming on the people.

However, WASA authorities said, they are working to stop illegal connections in addition to reducing system loss.

Managing Director of Rajshahi WASA Zakir Hossain said, "We are working to reduce the system loss by 10 per cent or less. That is why we have already started working to establish the accepted scientific method.
