Khasia communities in Moulvibazar celebrate New Year's Eve 'Seng Kut Snem' on Sunday.
The Khasi community celebrated their traditional New Year's Eve festival, Seng Kut Snem, with colorful cultural activities and unique competitions on Saturday at the Magurchhara Khasi Punji field in Moulvibazar.
Organized by the Khasi Social Council, the festival marked the 125th farewell of the Khasi year and welcomed the 126th with traditional games, songs, dances, and food.
The festival showcased the Khasi people's heritage, with attendees donning traditional attire and participating in various cultural and recreational activities. The bamboo pole climbing competition, archery, slingshot challenges, and a betel leaf gathering contest captured the crowd’s attention.
Philah Pohthmi, General Secretary of the Khasi Social Council, explained, "Seng Kut Snem is our way of bidding farewell to the old year. It reflects our traditions through games, dances, and songs, and brings together people from nearly 70 Khasi punjis in Sylhet division."
While the festival primarily celebrated Khasi traditions, it also attracted participants from other communities. Bengalis, professionals, and tourists from across the country joined in the festivities, making it a unifying event. A fair featuring traditional Khasi crafts, betel leaves, bamboo and cane items, and food added to the lively atmosphere.
Chandrima Goswami, a first-time attendee, shared her enthusiasm, "The culture, food, and crafts are so unique. I love the vibrant atmosphere of this festival."
Several prominent figures graced the event, including M.K.H. Jahangir Hossain PPM, Superintendent of Police for Moulvibazar district, and Mohammad Abdus Salam, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General). They lauded the Khasi community for preserving their traditions and fostering unity through the festival.
The Khasi Social Council has been organizing 'Seng Kut Snem' annually since 2009. The event not only strengthens social bonds within the Khasi community but also creates an opportunity for cultural exchange with other groups.
As the day-long celebration concluded, participants left with a sense of pride and joy, reaffirming the significance of 'Seng Kut Snem' in preserving Khasi heritage and promoting harmony among diverse communities.
