A total of 40 people have been detained on different charges in separate drives in 11 districts - Chandpur, Barishal, Jashore, Laxmipur, Kushtia, Cumilla, Feni, Manikganj, Satkhira, Kishoreganj and Bagerhat, in recent times.
CHANDPUR: Police arrested nine suspected members of a juvenile gang (Kishor Gang) from the railway line area under Hajiganj Municipality in the district on Friday.
The identities of the juvenile gang members could not be known immediately.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hajiganj Police Station (PS) Muhammad Mohiuddin Faruk said that on information, a team of the law enforcers conducted a drive in the railway line area of the municipality and arrested them at around 1 am.
The arrested persons were involved in various criminal activities including robbery, theft, hijacking, drug dealing and anti-social activities, the OC added.
BARISHAL: A total of 13 women were arrested on different charges in separate drives in the district recently.
Barisal City unit Mohila Awami League (AL) general secretary (GS) and the city corporation's former panel mayor Kohinoor Begum was arrested by police on Tuesday.
She was arrested from her residence on Bhatikhana Road under Ward No. 7 in the city in the afternoon.
Kotwali Model PS OC Mizanur Rahman confirmed about the arrest.
Police sources said that Kohinoor Begum is accused in four, out of the cases filed against AL leaders and workers in Barisal following the fall of Sheikh Hasina government. It is being investigated whether there was any other case filed against her, said the OC.
It may be mentioned that Kohinoor Begum has been elected councillor from the reserved seat No. 3 (general 7, 8 and 9) ward since 2008. She was the panel mayor in the last council of the Barisal City Corporation.
Meanwhile, police arrested 12 female members of an inter-district snatchers' gang in Agailjhara Upazila of the district recently.
The arrested women are: Sumaiya Akhter, 35, wife of Mishu Mia, Selina Begum, 35, wife of Shohrab Ali, Ruma Begum, wife of Lilu Mia, Banesa Begum, 25, Yasmin Akhter, 22, wife of Mobarak Mia, Ketara Begum, 48, wife of Jahur Ali, Salma Akhter, 34, wife of Alauddin Shah, Roksana Begum, 30, wife of Jitu Mia, and Aziran Begum, 30, wife of Aziz Mia, residents of Dharmandal Village under Nasirnagar Upazila in Brahmanbaria; and Kakoli Begum, 23, wife of Sujon Mia, Dina Akhter, 22, wife of Elach Mia, and Rafia Begum, 30, wife of Muzahid Mia, hail from Morapur Village under Lakhai Upazila in Habiganj.
Agailjhara PS OC Md Oliul Islam said that national identification smart cards were being distributed among 4,000 voters on Bagdha High School field in the upazila recently.
At that time, a gold chain of one Ruma Begum, wife of Baizid Talukder of Khajuria Village, was stolen. On suspicion, police arrested Sumaiya Akhter. Later on, following the information given by Sumaiya, the law enforcers detained the 11 other female members of the gang.
After filing of a case with Agailjhara PS, the arrested women were sent to jail following a court order, the OC added.
JASHORE: Three Juba League workers were arrested while bringing out a swift procession in the district.
They were arrested from Kanaitola area in Ramnagar Union under Sadar Upazila recently.
Jashore Kotwali PS OC Abdur Razzaque said that a swift procession led by Juba League worker Rana Hossain was brought out from Saleha Metal on the Jashore-Monirampur highway at Ramnagar Kanaitola area under Sadar Upazila in protest against 'detaining AL leaders and workers and launching repression on them across the country'.
During the procession, local BNP leaders and workers chased the Juba League leaders and workers and subsequently caught three of them. Later on, they were handed over to Jashore Kotwali Model PS custody.
The OC also said that three detained Juba League workers were shown arrested in a case related to burning the District BNP office. They were produced before the court, the OC added.
LAXMIPUR: Police have cracked the sensational and widely discussed murder case of gold trader Hiralal Debnath, arresting three suspects including a top-listed criminal.
During a press briefing at his office, Superintendent of Police (SP) in Laxmipur Rakib Hossain revealed that the motive behind the murder was to steal gold and money.
The suspects were produced before the court and police have sought a 10-day remand for one of them.
The arrested are: Ziaur Rahman alias Tushar, 26, notorious criminal Sajib Hossain alias Bahar Hossain, 27, and Mobarak Hossain, 35.
According to the press briefing, Ziaur Rahman, the main suspect, was tracked down using advanced technology and arrested in the remote haor area of Sarail Upazila in Brahmanbaria.
Zia's information led to the arrest of Bahar Hossain in Tongi, Gazipur. Bahar is a top-listed criminal with over 20 cases of murder and robbery.
Mobarak Hossain was arrested in Dalal bazaar, Sadar Upazila and has eight cases against him. The murder weapon, a Yamaha FZ-S motorcycle, was also recovered from Shahrasti Upazila in Chandpur District.
According to SP Rakib Hossain, Zia confessed of stabbing Hiralal to death. Although they attempted to steal gold and money, the suspects failed due to Hiralal's cries for help, which drew attention.
The suspects were sent to jail via a special court and remand requests are being processed.
Earlier, on November 8 last, Hiralal was ambushed by the suspects on his way home from his shop at Kazir Dighi Par Market.
His son Pritam Debnath filed a murder case on November 9, 2024.
KUSHTIA: One of the country's top rice businessmen Abdur Rashid, owner of Rashid Agro Food Products Ltd, was arrested in the district town recently.
He was arrested from Mojompur area, said Kushtia Model PS OC Shihabur Rahman Shihab.
Abdur Rashid, president of Rice Mills Owners Association, was arrested in a cheque dishonour case filed by farmer entrepreneur Atiqur Rahman, owner of Enam Feed Milla in Rajshahi, the OC said.
It was known that Atiqur Rahman paid Abdur Rashid Tk 1,33,64,867 in advance through cheques to buy raw materials for his feed mill.
Though Abdur Rashid accepted the money, he did not supply any raw materials in one and a half years. He even did not give any response when the money was sought from him. Later, on August 13, 2023, Atiqur Rahman filed a fraud case against Abdur Rashid and his manager with Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Rajshahi.
Though the court issued a summon in the case, Abdur Rashid did not appear at the court, Later on, the court issued an arrest warrant against him.
Police sources said that there are as many as 110 cases pending against Abdur Rashid across the country. Though over 100 warrants of arrest were issued against him in different cases, he remained untouched during the previous AL government owing to his close ties with former Food minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder. However, he also got bail in some of the cases.
CUMILLA: Police arrested the nephew of former railway minister Mujibul Haque in a case over killing eight bus passengers in an arson attack in 2015.
The ex-minister's nephew Tofail Hossain, 50, son of late Ambar Ali of Busyara Village, is a member of the executive committee of Chauddagram Upazila Unit AL of the district.
Chauddagram PS Inspector (Investigation) Mohammad Abdullah said that Tofail was arrested from his house in Basuara Village of Sreepur Union in the upazila, and later, was produced before the Cumilla court.
After the fall of AL-led government on August 5, bus owner Abul Khair filed the case with the court of Cumilla Senior Judicial Magistrate Judge Abu Bakar Siddique on September 11.
The others accused in the case included former railway minister and former lawmaker of Cumilla-11 Mujibul Haque, former mayor of Chauddagram Mizanur Rahman, former IGP AKM Shahidul Haque, former director general of RAB Benazir Ahmed, former SP of Cumilla Tutul Chakraborty, the then OC of Chauddagram PS Uttam Kumar Chakraborty.
In 2015, eight passengers were killed in a petrol bomb attack on a passenger bus in Chauddagram during blockade called by BNP and its alliances.
Following the incident, the then sub-inspector (SI) of Chauddagram PS Nuruzzaman Howladar filed a case against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb Ameer Dr Syed Abdullah Md Taher and 64 others.
FENI: Police arrested former ward councillor of Feni Municipality and AL leader Amir Hossain Bahar from the capital recently.
He was accused of numerous cases filed over the attack on anti-discrimination student movement on August 4 in Mohipal.
Feni Model PS OC Marmo Singh Tripura said, on information, a team of Feni Model PS conducted a drive at a house in Dhaka and held Bahar.
MANIKGANJ: Police arrested five persons for their alleged involvement in the attack on police and students during the anti-discrimination movement.
They were arrested from Manikganj Sadar, Singair, Harirampur and Ghior upazilas of the district, Additional SP (ASP) (Admin and Finance) said in a Press briefing.
The arrested persons are: Moazzem Hossain Lavlu, 42, son of late Nur Hossain of Farirchar Village under Manikganj Sadar Upazila, Dewan Quamrul, 47, son of late Dalil Uddin Dewan of Sanail Village under Singair Upazila, Ananda Sarkar, 55, son of Modon Sarkar of Uvajani Village under Ghior Upazila, Sanwar Hossain Sanu, 45, son of Sukuluddin of Basudebpur Village of Ghior Upazila, and Md Rakib Khan, 25, son of Md Arshed Ali of Ghior Upazila.
All the arrested persons were produced before the Judicial Magistrate, police said.
SATKHIRA: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested a teenager along with 10 gold bars at Bhomra border in the district.
The arrest took place in Falmoar area recently.
The 17-year-old detainee Sumon Islam is the son of Abdul Gafur Gazi, a resident of Lakshidari Village in Satkhira Sadar Upazila.
Lieutenant Colonel Ashraf-ul-Haque, commander of Satkhira 33 BGB Battalion, said that they received intelligence about an attempt to smuggle gold into India through the Bhomra border.
On information, a special team led by Subedar Afzal Hossain of Bhomra Company set up a check-post in the area. Shortly thereafter, Sumon Islam was spotted walking toward the border.
Upon intercepting and searching him, BGB personnel found 10 gold bars wrapped in black adhesive tape in his pants pocket.
The total weight of the seized gold is 1.2 kilograms, with an estimated value of approximately Tk 1.4 crore.
Commander Ashraf-ul-Haque added that the gold would be deposited at the Treasury Office and the accused would be handed over to Satkhira Sadar PS.
Meanwhile, BGB also conducted an operation in Kakdanga border area, where they seized four bottles of LSD, a highly potent drug.
KISHOREGANJ: Detective Branch (DB) of Police arrested two train ticket blacker along with 70 tickets from the district town recently.
The arrested persons are: Sabu Mia, 60, son of late Hasu Mia of East Tarapasha Village under Kishoreganj Sadar upazila, and Topu Chnadra Barman, 30, son of late Gopal Chandra Barman of Baruha Village under Tarail Upazila in the district.
It was known that on information, a team of the DB Police conducted a drive in the town and arrested Sabu. Later on, the team arrested Topu, owner of a computer shop, based on Sabu's statement.
In this connection, a case was filed against them under the Special Powers Act, 1974.
Superintend of Dhaka Zila Railway Police Md Answar Hossain confirmed the matter.
BAGERHAT: Police arrested a man, who had been hired to kill a local BNP leader in Sadar Upazila of the district on November 5 in exchange for money.
Deceased Sajib Tarfadar, 40, was a former joint convenor of Dema Union BNP and a former union parishad member.
Bagerhat SP Md Tawhidul Arif at press briefing shared the information at his office.
The SP said that the arrestee named Abu Bakkar Shikder, 57, a resident of Karapara Village under Karapara Union in Sadar Upazila, had been hired for killing the BNP leader.
The killers attacked on Sajib on the Bagerhat-Rampal road when he was en route to the district town from his home.
He was shot and hacked to death with sharp weapons in broad daylight on November 5 last.
During the incident His uncle Kamal Tarfadar, 65, who was riding with him on a motorcycle, was also injured in the shooting and is undergoing treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital.
After the incident, a team had been formed headed by ASP Asaduzzaman.
Police had been investigating the matter and after analyzing the intelligence information and the technology they arrested Abu Bakkar Kawkhali area of Pirojpur District, the SP said.
During the primary interrogation, the arrestee confessed to the law enforcers about his involvement in the killing and based on his given information, police recovered the firearm and ammunition from a ditch beside a residence of one Jamuna Saha of Sahapar area of Mirzapur.
He also said that four people directly involved in the killing and they were recruited for this purpose in exchange of money. Among them, police arrested one and efforts are ongoing to nab others.
Replying to a question, the SP said that Abu Bakkar and one of his associates were contracted for Tk 3 lakh but the arrestee did not have any information about others.
