Police arrested a Juba League activist, who opened fire at protesters during the recent mass uprising in Chattogram on August 4, a day before the fall of the Awami League-led government.
The arrestee was Touhidul Islam alias Hori Touhid alias Farid, 32, known as the follower of former Chandgaon ward councilor Esbarul Haq.
Quazi Md Tareque Aziz, additional deputy commissioner (public relations) of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police, CMP, said that acting on a tip-off, police arrested Touhidul from Kamal Nagar area of Satkhira at around 5PM on Friday.
He said after analyzing CCTV footage and intelligence report, law enforcers identified the accused and arrested him
He said that during interrogation, Touhidul confessed to law enforcers that he fired 28 rounds alone with a contract of Tk 5,000 during the recent student movement in Bahaddarhat area under Chandgaon police station in Chattogram city on August 4.
Police continue their drives to recover the Pakistani shooter gun, used during that incident, and his other weapons. The police official said they yet to find out Touhidul’s political involvement but he is known as a terrorist and professional mugger in the area.
The official said Touhidul is accused in 12 cases, including five murder cases, filed with the Chandgaon police station in Chattogram.
