Student dies being hit by battery-run rickshaw: JU observing 'Blockade'

First year students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) are observing blockade programme on Wednesday, locking the university's main gate protesting the death of their fellow Afsana Karim Rachi in an accident inside the campus.

They have been staging sit-in in front of the entrance gate of the university since 6:45AM after locking the gates of the campus to press home their eight-point demands.

The protest is being held by students of 53 batch and the protesters vowed to continue until the authorities accept their 8-point demands, including punishment to the culprit and ensuring safety of the students on the campus.
No vehicle is being allowed to move in and out of the campus during the protest.

Afsana, a marketing department student 53 batch, died after being hit by a speeding battery-operated rickshaws near the arts building of the campus around 6PM on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, deputy registrar Abdur Rahman Babul among four were suspended over the incident.

The university authorities also suspended classes and examinations for Wednesday.
