Road mishaps claim 13 lives in 10 districts

A total of 13 people including two women and a teenage girl have been killed in separate road accidents in 10 districts - Kushtia, Lalmonirhat, Gazipur, Dhaka, Sirajganj, Noakhali, Narayanganj, Sherpur, Rajshahi and Laxmipur, in three days.

DAULATPUR, KUSHTIA: A young teacher was killed in a road accident in Daulatpur Upazila of the district on Sunday.

The accident took place on the Galakati-Sangrampur road in Rifaitpur Union of the upazila in the afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Rabiul Islam, 30, son of Tofa Islam, a resident of Naranpur Village under Rifaitpur Union in the upazila. He was an assistant teacher of Jhaudia High School in Rifaitpur.

It was known that a truck and a motorcycle carrying Rabiul were collided head with each other on the Galakati-Sangrampur road in the afternoon, which left the teacher dead on the spot.

Being informed, police rushed to the scene and recovered the body. However, an unnatural death case was filed with Daulatpur Police Station (PS) in this connection.

PATGRAM, LALMONIRHAT: A head-on collision between two motorcycles resulted in death of a man in Patgram Upazila of the district on Sunday morning.

The accident took place on the regional road near Kaltapara in Patgram Sadar Union of the upazila at around 9 am.

The deceased was identified as Abul Kalam Azad, 48, a local businessman and a resident of Lalitarhat Village under Kuchlibari Union in the upazila.

He was heading towards his rice milling business at Ufamara Bazaar in Burimari Union. 

According to police and eyewitnesses, he left his home at around 8:30 am riding on his motorcycle. As he reached Kaltapara area near Hajiganj Bazaar at around 9 am, his motorcycle collided with another motorbike coming from the opposite direction. The impact caused him severe head injuries.

Locals immediately rescued the injured and rushed him to Patgram Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead upon arrival. 

Eyewitnesses reported that heavy morning fog might have caused poor visibility, leading to the accident.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Patgram PS Ashrafuzzaman Sarkar confirmed the incident, adding that as the deceased's family did not file any formal complaint, the body was handed over to the family without an autopsy.

SREEPUR, GAZIPUR: A female garment worker was killed after being hit by a bus while crossing a road in Sreepur Upazila of the district on Sunday morning.

The accident took place in Betjuri Tulakata area on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway under the upazila at around 8 am.

However, the identity of the deceased woman could not be known immediately. She was said to be a garments factory worker.

Quoting locals, Mawna Highway PS OC Ayub Ali said that the woman was going to her workplace in the morning. Later on, while she was crossing the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Betjuri Tulakata area, a speedy bus hit her, leaving the woman dead on the spot.

On information, police recovered the body from the scene.

Efforts are going on to identify the deceased and legal action would be taken in this regard, the OC added.

DHAMRAI, DHAKA: A pickup van driver and his helper were killed when it hit a truck in Dhamrai Upazila of the district early Sunday.

The accident took place at Dhulivita Bus Stand in Dhamrai at around 1 am.

The deceased were identified as pickup van driver Kanchan, 23, son of Anisur Rahman, hailed from Sadar Upazila in Jamalpur, and his helper Ashraful, 19, son of Islam Uddin from Netrakona District.

According to highway police, a brick-laden truck was standing at Dhulibita Bus Stand on the Dhaka-Aricha highway. At that time, a pickup van coming from behind rammed the truck. The driver of the pickup van and his helper died on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies from the scene.

Savar Highway PS OC Sawgatul Alam confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this regard.

SIRAJGANJ: A head-on collision between a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a drum truck resulted in deaths of two people in Shahjadpur Upazila of the district on Saturday afternoon.

The accident took place at around 3:15 pm in Garadah Old Bus Stand area on the Bogura-Nagarbari highway under the upazila.

The deceased were identified as Sujon Sheikh, 28, driver of the auto-rickshaw and son of Dulal Sheikh of Bonogram area, and Bahadur Mia, 30, son of Manik Mia of Jamirta Village in the upazila.

Sub-Inspector (SI) of Hatkumrul Highway PS Masudur Fahim confirmed the incident. 

Quoting locals, the SI said that a auto-rickshaw was travelling from Pabna when it collided head-on with an oncoming drum truck near the Garadah Old Bus Stand area at around 3:15 pm, which left two people dead on the spot. 

The truck driver managed to escape the scene, abandoning the vehicle before the police arrived. 

However, police have taken necessary actions following the accident and investigations are going on in this regard, the SI added.

NOAKHALI: A collision between a bus and a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw resulted in the tragic death of a teenage girl in Begumganj Upazila of the district on Saturday noon.

The accident took place in front of Kalikapur High School on the Zir Tali to Chandraganj regional highway under the upazila at around 12:45 pm. 

The deceased was identified as Irin, 13, daughter of Md Babul, a resident of Krishnarampur Village under Sayan Union in the upazila. 

In the meantime, Irin's younger sister Akhi, 7, was severely injured in the accident.

According to local sources, the siblings were on their way to Aminbazar in Amanullahpur Union from Nazirpur in Chowmuhani Municipality in the upazila when the collision occurred. A bus coming from the opposite direction struck their auto-rickshaw, causing the sisters to be thrown from the vehicle.

Locals then rescued the injured girls and rushed them to Noakhali General Hospital, where the on-duty doctor pronounced Irin dead and shifted Akhi to Dhaka for advanced treatment.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to the Noakhali General Hospital morgue for an autopsy. 

Chandraganj Highway PS OC Ruhul Amin confirmed the incident, saying that the bus driver fled the scene immediately after the accident and police are working to identify the vehicle.  

Legal action will be taken once a formal complaint is received, the OC added.

NARAYANGANJ: A man was killed after being hit by an unidentified vehicle at Fatullah in Sadar Upazila of the district on Saturday morning. 

The accident took place in Bhuigarn area of Fatullah on the Dhaka-Narayanganj link road flyover at around 9 am.

The deceased was identified as Md Imen Ali, 52, son of Md Abdur Rashid Mia, a resident of Islampur Noarpara area in Jamalpur District. 

It was known that an unidentified vehicle hit the man in Bhuigarn area of Fatullah in the morning, which left him dead on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the body from the scene and sent it to Narayanganj General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Fatullah Model PS SI Kamal Hossain confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this connection.

NALITABARI, SHERPUR: A housewife was killed after falling from a battery-powered auto-rickshaw in Nalitabari Upazila of the district. 

The deceased was identified as Amirun Khatun, wife of Rubel Mia of Nokla Upazila in the district. 

She was returning home along with her ailing mother Halima Begum after seeking medical treatment in Sherpur Town on Friday evening. The incident happened on a bumpy road near their home.

While travelling back, the auto-rickshaw hit a rough patch, causing a sudden jolt. Amirun Khatun accidentally fell out of the vehicle, sustaining severe head injuries. She was immediately taken to the Nalitabari Upazila Health Complex, and later, transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries early Saturday morning.

Being informed, police recovered the body and handed it over to the deceased's family members without an autopsy as per their request. Nalitabari PS OC Sanwar Hossain confirmed the incident, adding that an unnatural death case was filed in this regard.
 
RAJSHAHI: Two motorbike riders were killed on the spot when a passenger-laden bus knocked them down in Godagari Upazila of the district on Friday.

The accident took place in Avoya Kamarpara area on the Rajshahi-Chapainawabganj highway under the upazila in the afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Ashraful Islam, 42, son of Humayun Kabir, and Nazmul Haque, 30, son of Muhammad Kalu Mian. 

Both of them were residents of Kamalakantapur Kazipara Village under Shibganj Upazila in Chapainawabganj District.

Police and local sources said that Ashraful and Nazmul were returning to Kamalakantapur Kazipara in Shibganj Upazila of Chapainawabganj from Rajshahi riding on a motorcycle in the afternoon. On the way, a bus hit their motorcycle in Avoya Kamarpara area on the Rajshahi-Chapainawabganj highway of Godagari Upazila in Rajshahi, leaving the duo dead on the spot. 
Being informed, police recovered the bodies from the scene.

Godagari PS OC Moazzem Hossain confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard. 
 
LAXMIPUR: A minor boy was killed after being hit by a bus in Sadar Upazila of the district on Friday noon.

The accident took place on the Lakshmipur-Dhaka highway road in Joksin Bazar area under the upazila at around 2:30 pm.
The deceased was identified as Ahnaf Hossain, 7, son of Shafiqul Alam, a resident of Jadaiya area in the upazila.

Quoting locals, Chandraganj Highway PS SI Md Nur Mohammad said that the accident occurred when a bus of 'Jonaki Paribahan' coming from Laxmipur hit the boy in Joksin Bazar area while he was crossing a road at around 2:30 pm, which left him dead on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the body and handed it over to the deceased's family members without an autopsy as per request.

The law enforcers have seized the bus but its driver and his helper managed to flee the scene.

However, legal action is under process in this connection, the SI added.
