A Jubo League activist was shot dead by miscreants at Baghoil Rooppur intersection in Ishwardi upazila of Pabna district on Monday morning.
The deceased was identified as Walif Hossain Manik, 35, an active member of the local Jubo League unit and the son of Yunus Ali.
Manik was also a former vice-president of the Pakshi union unit of Chhatra League. According to family members, he was involved in the killing of Chhatra League activist Tafsir Ahmed Mana, for which he had been jailed. Manik had recently been released on bail after serving time in connection with the case.
On the day of the incident, Manik left his home in the morning to appear before the court in connection with the ongoing case. As he reached Baghoil Rooppur intersection around 9 a.m., 8-10 assailants opened fire on him and then stabbed him multiple times. He died on the spot due to his injuries.
Shahidul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Ishwardi Police Station, confirmed the incident and stated that the body was sent to Pabna General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Local sources suggest that the murder may be linked to ongoing tensions between Chhatra League and Jubo League factions in the area, who have been vying for supremacy in recent days. Authorities are investigating the motives behind the crime.
