Illegal makeshift shops inside the historic Suhrawardy Udyan, adjacent to Dhaka University (DU) campus, were evicted on Sunday.
The eviction drive was carried out in the presence of representatives from the Public Works Department (PWD), Dhaka Metropolitan Police, and the DU Proctorial Mobile Team.
Prior to this, announcements were made on Friday and Saturday through loudspeakers, notifying vendors of the drive.
Regarding the eviction, DU Proctor Associate Prof Saifuddin Ahmad told media, "Suhrawardy Udyan is primarily owned by the PWD. The illegal stalls and vendors within the park have been causing congestion and disturbances for the university, specially for the outsiders who visit the area. To address this issue, we had written to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and discussed the matter with them.
As a result, the Police Commissioner formed a law and order committee. Following the police's advice, we contacted the PWD and informed the public through loudspeakers on Friday and Saturday about the removal of the illegal stalls."
He said, "Finally, on Sunday, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, along with the DU Proctorial Body and Mobile Team, carried out the eviction operation in the presence of representatives from the Public Works Department. Afterward, under the supervision of the PWD, the entrance to Suhrawardy Udyan near TSC was sealed off and locked."
Earlier on May 21 this year, the Daily Observer published a report titled "Suhrawardy Udyan now a den of makeshift shops, extortion."
