A man was allegedly beaten to death on suspicion of theft at Monohardi upazila in Narsingdi district.
The incident occurred late Saturday night in Kocharchar village under Daulatpur Union. Monohardi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jewel Hasan confirmed.
The deceased, Fazlur Rahman, 50, was a resident of Montola village in Khidirpur union and son of late Moktar Uddin.
According to police and local sources, villagers caught Fazlur Rahman while he was allegedly attempting to steal an auto-rickshaw from the house of Amir Hossain. They then subjected him to a mob beating, resulting in his death on the spot. Following the incident, his body was reportedly dumped near a pond belonging to Khoka Mia in a neighboring village.
Family members of Fazlur Rahman claim that he had never been involved in theft. They stated that he had returned from working abroad and had been mentally unstable for some time.
