CHATTOGRAM, Nov 14: Construction works of the Bay Terminal, one of the mega projects under the Shipping Ministry, has been progressing fast.

The Interim Government has emphasized the need for construction of the Bay Terminal and the Shipping Ministry is wholeheartedly trying to build the country's biggest ever port facilities under the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA).

The CPA has already acquired 567 acres of land for the construction of the Bay Terminal. The CPA also applied to Chattogram district administration for lease of 188 acres of khas land which is now pending.  CPA also applied to the Ministry for acquisition of 124 acres of forest land for the project.

Of the existing 567 acreas of land, 500 acres of khas land and 67 acres land purchased from private owners.

Meanwhile the CPA had taken up the project for construction of three terminals, 1,500-metre multipurpose terminal, 1,225-metre container terminal and 830-metre container terminal in 2013 last. Later on CPA decided to build another 1,225-metre-long terminal there with four jetties, enabling the terminal to berth four to five vessels at a time for handling gas and oil.

For construction of the Bay Terminal, CPA needs 2,500 acres of land.

Nearly 878 acres of land are now available from the government khas land and private land. But most of the land should be reclaimed from the sea after mud filling.

The rest 1,622 acres of land will be acquired with Break water reclamation. The World Bank is now interested to finance both the Break water reclamation of land and the Navigational channel. The cost of those two portions of the Bay terminal has been estimated at around Tk 4,000 crore.

The German consultancy firm conducted a feasibility study and detail drawings and designs on that part of the construction, and later, it will also monitor the construction work.

Berth length of the first phase (Container Terminal 1 and Multipurpose Terminal) is 2,500m, and then additional 1,000m of the second phase (Container Terminal 2). The total length of berth of Bay Terminal will be 3,500m.
