LALMONIRHAT, Nov 14: A mobile court in Aditmari Upazila of the district raided an illegal polythene manufacturing factory and imposed a fine of Tk 1,60,000, seizing one metric ton of polythene products.
The operation was led by Upazila Assistant Commissioner (AC) (Land) Rowjatun Jannat on Monday in Durarkuti Colony area of Saptibari Union in the upazila.
The government has completely banned the production, distribution, and use of polythene due to its severe environmental impact.
Despite this, a factory had allegedly been running a polythene factory in Durarkuti Colony for an extended period, supplying the banned product nationwide.
Acting on a tip-off, Upazila AC Land Rowjatun Jannat along with police and officials from the Department of Environment conducted the drive and seized nearly one metric ton of the illegal material.
Owner of the factory Azad Hossain was fined Tk 1,60,000 for his offense and the court ordered an immediate halt to the factory's operations.
Executive Magistrate and AC Land Rowjatun Jannat said that the factory owner has been fined and production has been ordered to stop.
The seized materials will be handled according to the instructions of higher authorities, she added.
