Three people have been killed and at least 56 others injured in separate incidents in three districts - Joypurhat, Sunamganj and Patuakhali, in recent times.

JOYPURHAT: Miscreants slaughtered an auto-rickshaw driver before snatching his vehicle in the district on Thursday.

The incident took place in Hatil Mangnipara area on the Khanjanpur-Panchbibi road of the town at dawn.

The deceased was identified as Dilip Chandra, 52, son of Makhan Chandra, a resident of Purba Dogachhi Panitala Ashrayan Prakalpa in Sadar Upazila. He was an auto-rickshaw driver by profession.

Police and local sources said that Dilip along with his battery-run auto-rickshaw went out of the house on Wednesday noon. He used to run auto-rickshaw whole night and return home in the morning.

At dawn on Thursday, while he was returning home, a group of snatchers stopped his auto-rickshaw in Hatil Mangnipara area on the Khanjanpur-Panchbibi road of the town, and slaughtered him before snatching the vehicle.

Later on, local people spotted his throat-slit body lying in a sugarcane field in the area in the morning and informed the matter to police.

Being informed, police recovered the body from the scene and sent it to Joypurhat Sadar Adhunik Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Joypurhat Sadar Police Station (PS) Shahed Al Mamun confirmed the incident, adding that the law enforcers are investigating the matter and trying to detain those involved in the killing.

Superintend of Police in Joypurhat Muhammad Abdul Wahab visited the scene.

The incident took place in Bagmoyna Tajpur Village under Pailgaon Union of the upazila at around 4 pm.
The deceased was identified as Sujat Mia, 70, a resident of the area.

Police and local sources said that Sujat Mia and Abdul Kachher of the area had been at loggerheads over constructing a floor of a local mosque in Bagmoyna Tajpur Village. Following this, the two groups of villagers, equipped with indigenous weapons, were locked into a clash on Tuesday afternoon, which left at least 40 people critically injured.

The injured persons were then rescued and taken to Jagannathpur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared Sujat Mia dead.

Physician of the health complex Dr Srijana Sarker Toma said that Sujat Mia had died before being taken to the hospital.
Of the injured, 13 people were shifted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for better treatment, the physician added.
