COX'S BAZAR, Nov 13: Border Guard Bangladesh has arrested a Rohingya man carrying drugs and a firearm following a raid along the Naf River in the border area of Cox's Bazar.

The BGB claims the Rohingya man is a 'drug trafficker'.

He was detained from the Anwar Project Area of the Naf River in Teknaf Upazila's Hnila Union on Tuesday, said Lt Col Md Mohiuddin Ahmed, chief of the BGB Teknaf-2 Battalion.

Detainee Md Nur Rashid, 25, is the son of the late Md Salimullah from the Teknaf Leda Rohingya camp.

A BGB team raided the Anwar Project Area after being tipped off about a big shipment of drugs being smuggled in late on Tuesday night, said Mohiuddin.

"At one point, BGB members saw three suspicious people coming towards the riverbank, crossing the line at the zero point of the river border, and ordered them to stop."

Two people jumped off the boat and swam towards Myanmar. The BGB members detained the third person on the vessel, he said.

The BGB team searched the boat and found a plastic bag hidden inside. The bag contained 100,000 yaba tablets, a firearm and a bullet.

Nur Rashid confessed he was involved in drug smuggling at the Naf border for a long time, the BGB officer said. Nur is also a member of a Rohingya camp-based robbery gang called the 'Abul Kalam Bahini'.    —bdnews24.com
