BRAHMANBARIA, Nov 13: A woman and her two children have allegedly died after ingesting poison in Brahmanbaria's Sadar Upazila.
Riaz Uddin Mitul, a doctor at the emergency department at Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital, declared them dead soon after they were rushed there on Wednesday.
The dead have been identified as Sharmin Akhter, 24, and her daughters Raoza, 5, and Nowrin, 3.
Dr Mitul said: "The poisoned woman was brought into the hospital's emergency department a little after 11am. The two children arrived shortly after we gave instructions to admit her to the medicine ward. We tested them and found they were dead. Their mother died soon after."
Workers at the emergency department said that Sharmin's husband Ashraf Mia brought the three of them to the hospital. The family members who accompanied them to the hospital said that Sharmin had poisoned her two children before taking the poison herself. After the three of them died, Ashraf and the family fled the hospital.
"Police have been sent to the scene after the incident was reported," said Mozaffar Hossain, chief of Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station.
"It is believed that the mother poisoned herself and her two children over a family dispute. Attempts are ongoing to arrest the fugitive Ashraf and the other family members."
The three bodies are being kept at the hospital morgue, police said.
