Gazipur, Nov 11, Demanding three-month unpaid wages, workers of TNZ Apparels Ltd have again blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Gazipur's Maleker Bari area on Sunday for the second consecutive day.
Demonstrating workers said the authorities assured them several times to pay the dues but, later, failed to pay the overdue wages. This time, they will not leave the road until their dues are met, the workers asserted.
Meanwhile, fearing sabotage, 30 factories in Gazipur were declared closed. Army personnel met with the protesting workers but could not pacify them.
Gazipur Metropolitan Deputy Police Commissioner (Traffic) Ibrahim Khan said, "The readymade garment workers were protesting blocking the highway overnight. A 30-kilometre tailback was created on both sides of the highway due to the road block. Passengers were bound to take alternative routes. Cargo vehicles stuck in the tailback contain perishable goods."
