Road mishaps claim 19 lives in 10 districts

A total of 19 people have been killed and several others injured in separate road accidents in 10 districts - Moulvibazar, Laxmipur, Chattogram, Lalmonirhat, Barishal, Tangail, Satkhira, Joypurhat, Natore and Kushtia, in recent times. 

KAMALGANJ, MOULVIBAZAR: Three people were killed and four others injured in separate road accidents in Kamalganj Upazila of the district in four days.

A college student was killed and two others were injured in a road accident in the upazila on Saturday. 

The accident took place in Kalimandir area adjacent to Chaitraghat Bridge of the upazila in the morning.

The deceased was identified as Hamdan Shohan, 21, son of Moeen Ahmed, a resident of Muslim Quarter area in Moulvibazar District Town. He was a twelfth grader of Moulvibazar Government College.

The injured persons are: Nasir Mia, 17, and Minhaz Mia, 18, residents of Muslim Quarter area.

Police and local sources said that a motorcycle carrying the trio collided with a CNG coming from the opposite direction in Kalimandir area adjacent to Chaitraghat Bridge in the morning, which left the three critically injured.

Locals then rescued the injured and took them to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared Shohan dead.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kamalganj Police Station (PS) Syed Iftekhar Hossain confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this connection.

On the other hand, two more college students were killed and two others injured in a road accident in the upazila on Wednesday morning.

The accident took place in Bottala area on the Bhanu-Gach-Sreemangal road at around 9:45 am.

The deceased were identified as Sayeem Mia, 18, and Amit Sutradhar, 18. Both were students of Kamalganj Government College.

The injured are: Jannatul, 11, and Shawkat Dev, 17.

According to locals and police, a CNG-run auto-rickshaw was heading towards Kamalganj from Sreemangal in the morning. When a child fell out of the moving vehicle, the driver lost control in an attempt to avoid hitting the child, causing the vehicle to crash into a tree and become severely mangled. Four passengers were critically injured at that time.

Sayeem Mia, from East Maizdi in Sreemangal, was declared dead upon arrival at Kamalganj Upazila Health Complex. Later on, Amit Sutradhar succumbed to his injuries at Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital. 

The two other injured passengers are currently receiving treatment at Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital.

Kamalganj PS OC Syed Iftekhar Hossain confirmed the incident.

LAXMIPUR: Two teenage boys were killed in separate road accidents in Ramganj and Ramgati upazilas of the district in four days. 

A teenage motorcyclist was killed as his motorbike collided head-on with a passenger bus in Ramganj Upazila on Friday.

The accident took place in front of Palli Bidyut office on the Ramganj-Hajiganj road of the upazila at night.

The deceased was identified as Shakib Hossain, 16, son of Md Abul Kashem, a resident of Kalchama area under Ramganj Upazila.

Local sources said that the accident occurred when a passenger bus collided head-on with the motorcycle in the aforesaid area, leaving Shakib critically injured. 

He was then rescued by locals and rushed to Ramganj Upazila Health Complex. As his condition deteriorated further, he was referred to Dhaka. But he succumbed to his injures on the way to Dhaka.

Local police confirmed the incident.

Meanwhile, another teenage boy was killed after being hit by a battery-run auto-rickshaw in Ramgati Upazila on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Maruf Bhuiyan, 19, son of grocery shop owner Jamal Uddin Bhuiyan of Haziganj Bazar, a resident of Ward No. 3 under Charporagachha Union in the upazila. He was a twelfth grader of Noakhali Government College. 

It was known that Maruf was heading towards Alexandar area from Haziganj Bazar at around 12 pm riding on a motorcycle. On the way, a battery-run auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction hit the motorcycle in front of Farazi Mosque on the Ramgati-Sonapur regional road, leaving him critically injured.

Locals then rescued the injured and rushed to Noakhali General Hospital, where the on-duty doctor shifted him to Dhaka for better treatment.

Later on, Maruf succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Dhaka at around 11 pm while undergoing treatment.

Ramgati PS OC Md Kabir Hossain confirmed the incident.

CHATTOGRAM: Two people were killed and at least 17 others injured in separate road accidents in the district in four days. 

Two young men were killed as their motorbike crashed into a lamp post on the Elevated Expressway at EPZ area on Friday night.

The deceased were identified as Md Moktar, 28, and Md Rubel, 36, residents of Sadarghat area in the port city.

Police sources said that the accident occurred when the motorbike rider lost his control over the steering of the vehicle and hit the lamp post while returning from Patenga. After being hit by the lamp post, Moktar and Rubel fell onto the ground and died on the spot. Being informed, police recovered the bodies. 

EPZ PS OC Mohammad Akhteruzzaman confirmed the incident.

On the other hand, at least 17 people including a journalist were injured as a bus overturned after losing its control over the steering in Patiya Upazila of the district on Tuesday afternoon.

The accident took place in Shah Amanat Gas Pump area on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar Arakan road under the upazila at around 3 pm.

The injured persons are: Kamal Uddin, 70, Patiya Correspondent of Dainik Inkilab Nur Hossain, 55, Dhanandan Shill, 76, Md Shafi, 68, Md Farhad, 22, Marzina Begum, 40, Naimul, 58, Titu, 50, Bablu, 36, Md Faruq, 60, Lokman, 55, Shihab, 43, Maimul, 45, Farhad, 22, Shawkat Akbar, 40, Nesar Uddin, 29, and Mujibur Rahman, 45.

Of them, Kamal, Dhanandan, Farhad, Titu and Faruq were shifted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital from Patiya Upazila Health Complex in critical condition.

It was known that a Patiya-bound bus from Chattogram overturned after losing its control over the steering in Shah Amanat Gas Pump area on the highway in the afternoon, which left at least 17 people injured.

Patiya Crossing Highway Police OC Jashim Uddin confirmed the incident.

LALMONIRHAT: A local leader of Awami Leader (AL) was killed after falling from a motorcycle in Kaliganj Upazila of the district on Friday afternoon.

The accident took place in Tetultala area of Kalbhairab Bazar under Dalgram Union in the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Firoz Hossain Zihad, 55, a resident of Hatibandha Upazila. He was the president of Bhelaguri Union AL.

It was known that he lost control of the steering and fell from the motorcycle while returning home from Rangpur, which left him critically injured.

He was then rescued by locals and taken to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Sub-Inspector (SI) of Kaliganj PS Ershadul Islam confirmed the incident, adding that the body was handed over to the deceased's family members as they had no complaints.

BARISHAL: Two friends were killed and another was injured after a motorcycle hit a roadside wall in Muladi Upazila of the district on Friday afternoon.

The accident occurred in Nomerhat Bazar area of Charkalekhan Union in the upazila.

The deceased were identified as Md Shapan Bhya, 30, and Kawsar Hossain, 25, residents of Charkalekhan Union.

It was reported that the driver of the motorcycle lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a roadside wall while the three were heading to their destination. One person died on the spot and other two were critically injured.

The injured were rescued and taken to a local hospital. Later on, another succumbed to his injuries while being transferred to Dhaka for further treatment.

The other injured person is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka.

Muladi PS OC Zahirul Islam confirmed the incident.

TANGAIL: Three people were killed and several others injured in separate road accidents in the district in two days. 

A kindergarten teacher was killed and several others were injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw on Thursday.

The accident occurred at around 9:30 am in Rasulpur area on the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge highway.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Alim, 50, hailed from Rajapur Char area under Bhuapur Upazila in the district. He used to live at Ghantandi Notun Para under Bhuapur Municipality and was the director of Probhati Kindergarten.

Locals said he was going to work in Bhuapur from Tangail riding on a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw in the morning. On the way, when they reached Rasulpur area, a Dhaka-bound truck ran over their auto-rickshaw. He died on the spot.

Tangail Medical College Hospital Police Box Assistant SI Alamgir said that the body has been kept in the hospital morgue and it will be handed over to the relatives after legal process.

Earlier, two individuals were killed and two others injured in a road accident in Dhanbari Upazila of the district on Wednesday.

The accident occurred in the small hours of Wednesday in Baniajan Bus Stand area on the Dhaka-Tangail-Joydebpur highway.

The deceased were identified as Akbar Hossain, 32, son of Sada Ali, Abbas Sardar, 39, son of Habu Sardar. Both of them were residents of Daulatpur Upazila in Kushtia.

Quoting locals, Dhanbari PS OC SM Shahidullah said that the accident occurred when the driver of the Jamalpur-bound truck from Khulna lost control over the steering and overturned into a roadside ditch. Two passengers of the vehicle died on the spot and two others sustained critical injuries at that time.

On information, police personnel and firefighters rushed there and rescued the two injured, who were subsequently sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for better treatment, he said.

The bodies were kept at police custody and the necessary actions were underway to be taken in this regard, the OC added.

SATKHIRA: Three people were killed after a truck smashed their motorcycle on the Satkhira-Khulna highway in Sadar Upazila of the district early Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Arizul Gazi, 28, son of Akbar Ali Gazi of Jhikargachha Upazila in Jashore; and Asadul Islam Fakir, 55, and Abdus Selim, 35, son of Abdul Aziz, residents of Tala Upazila in Satkhira.

Two bodies recovered from the spot and one from the Sadar Hospital, said Satkhira Sadar PS SI Bishwajit Sarkar.

The SI also said that a speedy truck ran over a motorbike, leaving a biker and two pillion passengers killed on the spot at Binerpota BSCIC area on the highway in the early morning.

KALAI, JOYPURHAT: A young boy was killed in a road accident in Kalai Upazila of the district on Wednesday morning.

The accident took place in Punat Basher Bridge Koling Food Processing Cold Storage area on the Kalai-Mokamtala road of the upazila at around 6 am.

The deceased was identified as Shahinur Rahman, 26, son of late Sanaullah Manik, hailed from Mahasthangarh Nama Bazaar area of Bogura District.

According to the deceased's relatives, Shahin went to his father-in-law's house in Jagdambur Village under Punat Union of Kalai Upazila. 

He faced the tragic fate when he was returning home from the in-law's house.

Confirming the death matter, Kalai PS OC Zahid Hossain said that locals discovered the body with his motorbike fallen beside him and informed police. 

Being informed, police recovered the body from the scene and took into police custody. Legal actions will be taken in this regard, the OC added.

BARAIGRAM, NATORE: An auto-van driver was killed and a passenger injured after being hit by a bus in Baraigram Upazila of the district on Tuesday.

The accident took place at night in front of Bonpara Agriculture and Technical College on the Natore-Dhaka highway of the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Abdus Samad, son of Hossain Fakir, a resident of Kalikapur Moholla under Bonpara Municipality.

Bonpara Highway PS OC Ismail Hossain said that Abdus Samad was heading towards Bonpara from Khejurtala with a passenger on his auto-van. 

On the way, a bus hit the auto-van from behind in front of Bonpara Agriculture and Technical College, leaving its driver dead on the spot and passenger injured. 

Being informed, Fire Service personnel recovered the body.

The injured was rescued and admitted to a local private hospital.

However, a case was filed with the PS in this regard, the OC added.

DAULATPUR, KUSHTIA: An elderly woman was killed and at least five others were injured in a road accident in Daulatpur Upazila of the district on Tuesday noon.

The accident took place near Pragpur Pashchimpara Football Field of the upazila at around 2 pm.

The deceased was identified as Beguna Khatun, 70, wife of Abul Hossain, a resident of Garura Mistri Para Village in the upazila. 

It was known that a battery-run pakhi van (local vehicle) and a shallow engine-run steering vehicle were collided head-on near Pragpur Pashchimpara Football Field at noon, which left at least six people seriously injured.
Locals then rescued the injured.

Of the injured, Beguna Khatun was taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries at around 10 pm.

Adabaria Union Parishad Member Mukhtaruzzaman Muntu confirmed the incident, adding that a case was filed with Daulatpur PS in this regard.
