Three people allegedly committed suicide in separate incidents in two districts - Kurigram and Chandpur, in two days.
NAGESHWARI, KURIGRAM: A former councillor of Nageshwari Municipality in the district reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself on Saturday night.
The deceased was identified as Abu Taleb, 46, a resident of Payradanga area.
According to police and the deceased's family sources, Abu Taleb was addicted to drugs for a long time. He might have committed suicide at some point at night due to mental stress.
Later on, the family members found his hanging body on Sunday morning and informed police.
Being informed, police recovered the body.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nageshwari Police Station (PS) Mizanur Rahman confirmed the incident.
CHANDPUR: Two young men allegedly committed suicide in Faridganj Upazila of the district on Friday.
The incidents took place in Sholla Village under Subidpur West Union of the upazila in the evening.
The first incident involved 16-year-old Fahim, son of late Rafiqul Islam and a bakery worker in Dhaka, who ingested poison at his home.
Fahim's sister Laboni reported that he had been in a relationship with a local girl. Four days back, he returned home, insisting on marrying the girl, but the family dissuaded him due to his young age. In distress, Fahim consumed poison. Despite efforts to save him, doctors at Chandpur General Hospital pronounced him dead.
Shortly after, 18-year-old Abu Osman, from the same area, was found hanging in his room. Abu Osman, son of Abdul Motaleb, had been in a relationship with a girl he met over mobile phone.
Family members revealed that Osman's parents had forbidden him from communicating with her, which they believe drove him to take his own life. Abdul Motaleb shared that his son had recently passed HSC examinations from Sholla School and College.
Motaleb explained that he and his wife had gone to a family gathering, leaving Osman at home, only to return and find him hanging from the ceiling with his mother's scarf.
Faridganj PS OC Hanif Sarkar confirmed the incidents, saying that on information, police recovered the bodies and sent those to Chandpur General Hospital morgue for autopsies.
However, two unnatural death cases were filed with Faridganj PS in these connections and legal procedures are ongoing as authorities continue their investigations, the OC added.
